There is an old cemetery on our lease in walker county. There are around 50 graves with death dates ranging from 1820's to 1920's. It is about 30 yards from the nearest logging road. It is completely grown up around it. Seems like they logged all around and possibly on too off it the last time it was cut which was probably 20-30 years ago. There do seem to be a few mature pines right in the middle of it that might have been left. Just wandering what, if any, responsibility the timber company might have toward this cemetery. Would they be allowed to harvest Tue timber around it if it meant disturbing the head stones? I have heard of small family plots out in the middles of the woods before but there are at least 50 graves out there.

They should mark around it and avoid it all together. It is illegal to knowingly disturb a cemetery or any human burial on public or private property in Alabama. They should flag around it so the cutters can avoid it.

cool We have a small one on ours.... The owner of the property just ask us to respect it and don't vandalize it..... We have a field planted less than 100 yards from it... Of course we call it Cemetery Field....

Gonna go back in there after the seasons and do a little work to it. Cut up some of the deadfalls laying on the tombstones, etc. Maybe post some signs up around it.

Check the dates - most likely lots of young people from the flu epidemic of 1919.

We have two on our lease. One is way back in the woods with a short iron fence around it. Pretty cool and we leave it alone.

We have a small one on our place. We have marked the corners with posts and leave it undisturbed.

Back in the early 90's I was hunting with a buddy in Beatrice. We got to the place too late to hunt on Friday evening, but I did walk down a logging road and glassed a place to set up Saturday morning. I walked in Saturday morning in the dark, walked down a ridge and found a saddle or as best I could tell in the dark. As the sky started to get light I could make out rocks on the ground. I thought it was odd because there aren't rocks normally laying on the ground in Beatrice like there is at home. When the sun finally got up good I could see that the rocks were old limestone head stones.

There's a fellow that lives in Walker Co that specializes in tracking down old cemeteries, marking them and researching their history. My dad has a copy of a book he wrote on the subject. He has documented some insane number of cemeteries. Something like 600+. I can't remember the guys name but I'm sure it would be a pretty easy google search.

This^^^^^. We have a pretty large one on our property, last person buried was
1907. We flagged it good so the loggers stayed clear.

There are some real interesting things you'll notice about the old graveyards. An older fellow pointed out one time how there was one man with two or three women and several small graves. It was his wives and babies that died giving, or during, childbirth. I was always told the ones with markers but no names were usually slave cemeteries. Don't know if that's true or not.

Check the headstones to see if any of them may have a Confederate marker. The marker should have a unit number, state name, infantry/cavalry/artillery and company letter.

Don't think you gonna find too many slave cemeteries in my part of the state.

we have one on our lease too.

It is out of the way of our food plots and pretty much everything else.

Mrs. dragfan66 and myself have committed ourselves to cleaning it up when we get some time.

Most of the graves are very, very old. I'm talking late 1800's/early 1900's old.

Don't confuse my user name with any sort of alphabet faggotry.
