laugh I simply posted that my dad got bit and we spent the evening yesterday evening in the hospital. It was a pit bull, end of story. Some of you questioned how I know its really a pit? Seriously? If anyone thinks there is no merit behind the fact that pits have more reported attacks/bites to humans that any other breed, so be it. Do you have any data to back up your theory? There are several breeds that are more aggressive than the others, it don't mean they are all bad. In this case, the owner knew the dog was aggressive, and has kept it up for a long time. Just happened to be out when my dad was riding by and it got him. If you have a pit, I am sure they will always be gentle and loving, and never give you any trouble. thumbup

Frankie, sine you read the cdc link and know the data came from an online search of news reports of dog bite death related fatalities, how should this data be collected to give a better more scientific breakdown of deaths caused by breed?

CDC gets its statistics from medical records and law enforcement reports.

EHH, chiggers don't embed under your skin. They bite you and the enzyme in their body from the bite is what creates the irritating, itchy bump. Some folks are bothered by them more than others, similar to how some are bothered more by poison ivy. The fingernail polish can't suffocate anything under your skin because there's nothing there to suffocate.

I agree, but in the cdc link it states the years the data was collected from and that it came from an online search and the humane societies data base.

Interesting. Maybe they use multiple sources. They're idiots if they only rely on online searches and the $($@#* humane society.

The linked article isn't actually a CDC document, but is on their website for reference. It was written by a Veterinarian journal.

first you'd need to know how many there are of each breed . how many pits are there , how many of them bite . same with each large breed dog .

this is my problem with the data in a large numbers of the reports , the dog is guest to be this or that . you put 10 people in a room one might know what a pit is .

the other reason is why the data is gathered to start with . basically the data is from ARA's . ARA's not only want pits gone but ever other dog .

there is no real data out there on dog bite that i know of . some seem to hold this data as the holy grail on what is the "worst" dog breed and the data is just not there to prove that . on the other hand there is no data out there that says pits aint the worst dog breed .

What does knowing how many of a breed there are have to do with how many people got bit?

You accuse me of back peddling for clarifying what is in a link to Clem, but then spout off a bunch of incomprehensible gibberish that makes no sense trying to make a point.

Even if the data used to generate the paper is skewed in pit bull identification, 76 of 238 fatalities were still associated with the breed, which is 17 more fatalities than second place. So even if there is some miss-identification they still are number one.

It's late and I am heading to bed. Feel free to post some data that says beagles are the number on killer of people in the world.

There used to be a disclaimer on the CDC site that says the reason they stopped keeping stats on individual breeds was because of the difficulty in Identifying breeds, even by experienced Animal Control Officers and Veterinarians. It also stated that the only true way of identifying the breed was thru DNA testing.

Dogbite.org stated mission is the eradication of the Pit Bull breed.

By their own admission they said they included, and I quote, " Lab mix and Boxer and Boxer mix in their "mixed breed" stats as Pit Bulls.

I have not seen anywhere that anyone has said that the breed can be dangerous, just not as dangerous as presented on this site and with the vileness exhibited towards them on this site.

Just my opinion take it or leave it.

if you look at the people behind the data, their goal is irradiation of all dog breeds

some people will believe what they want regardless of facts, Im only trying to say that when it comes to this topic alot of folks have been wrongly informed, if your intrested in the TRUTH, goes to this link. Why people fail to resist the facts, and yet cling so strongly to the lies they have been fed is beyond me.

mis identification

this is why the data is easily misreported, and used to slander the name of the renamed "nanny dog". These dogs were once popular for man, many reasons.

My wife was walking a couple days ago and we have some new neighbors that has a pit bull. He came after my wife with the owner running and hollering at the dog. She finally got the dog back. Now I walk with her past that house in the afternoons. If he comes back out on the right of way after her again and shows aggression,,, he will be dealt with. I would sure hate to kill a mans dog but o-well. They should have him chained or in a pen. We have small kids that also walk up and down the street. I see some bad ju-ju in that dogs near future

As it should be.
You are not going to "deal" with a Pit Bull, you are going to "deal" with an aggressive dog that happens to be, as described by you, a pit bull.

There are those on this site that would trespass onto your neighbors yard and poison that dog simply because the dog is a pit Bull breed....or atleast they think it is, regardless of whether the dog has shown aggression or not.
Given that aggression is common with all dogs when it comes to "their" territory it bewilders me where they get this hatred of the breed. Oh they'll say it's because they kill babies, more than other dog breeds, but fail to realize the mini blind cords and babies momma's boyfriend kill way more babies a year than Pit Bulls and besides, how many babies is too much? Aren't babies killed by other breeds just as important? Why is their killers breed ignored?
