We have loamy/sandy soil at our place. In the past we've used some typical seed mixes with clover, rape, wheat, etc. but they have been poor producers. Assuming water, N P K and other nutrients are not limiting factors, and you were going to plant ONE seed type only, what would you use for this soil type?

I wouldn't plant just one seed type, a mix is always better. Go with a cereal rye/crimson clover or yucchi/radish mix. Make your own. Have you done a soil sample? If not, you should. Whats your soil ph?

We have been no tilling rye for 3 years now, after it sprouts we top seed with ladino, crimson and arrow leaf. I just poison, spread seed and fert, then lightly disc. I leave a few every year that don't get seed and they still come up from what is left in the seed bank.

Soil sample should be back from the lab shortly. Limed it real good two years ago but we haven't sampled the soil in over 5 years so It'll be interesting to compare the two. I intended to mix clover, rye and turnips but just wanted to get some opinions from others. The commercial mixes we've used in the past have always been a bust.

Most commercial mixes, are mostly wheat, usually about 65%. Wheat likes nitrogen. Cereal rye could care less. IMO, cereal rye is one of the best seeds available for deer hunters. I use it to top sew into lanes, all the time, grows well.
