I'm going to Cape San Blas and plan to fish a lot from shore. We will be staying out on the Cape. I need some tips and specific places to go, specific surf shot, passes, jetties, canals, ect. I'm not planning on booking a charter. Also planning to try my hand at surf fishing for smaller (4-5') shark. I'm not toting the 9/0 to the beach, but I will be casting with a 3/0 and a 8' rod.

Here is what I would do. I would rent a kayak. You can rent one for the week for about $120. If you are driving in (towards the park and away from Highway 30) there is a place you can launch on the right across from the pile of large rip rap. It is easy to find.
Put in there, it is on the bay, there is a lot of water you can cover. You can catch trout like crazy over there. Also, you can pick up scallops. (I think the season is still on) You can paddle for hours and the water is waist deep almost everywhere you will go.

Go to the state park and take the first trail to the right - it is actually before the gate. Walk down the trail to the bay and throw in the trenches between the sand bars. I caught quite a few that way, and I was the only person there.
Also, for the surf, I used fish bites on a pompano rig and caught lots of fish.
I will just go ahead and say it - I am jealous! Thanks. What are fish bites?

^^^ Good advice. The trail he's referring to will put you out near a big point. We were there all last week fishing from kayaks. The specks seemed scattered, but we caught several 4+ lbs...a couple pushing 6#.
Sharks are everywhere. If I was really trying to catch one I'd get on the deep water to the left of the launch in the state park. Thanks, Where did you stay? We'll be at Barrier Dunes, which is real close to the state park.

I just got back a few weeks ago from the cape. Stayed in a house just past Barrier Dunes. Fishing from the beach, I caught a good many pompano using Fishbites. They seem to like green much better than pink. Other people were having luck with sand flee flavored fishbites. Just cut the fishbite strips into pieces about 1/2 long and 1/8 wide. Not sure if the Pompano will still be there, I am not a shore fishing expert(but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night). Also caught lady fish, whiting and jack Crevalle. People were catching sharks as well with cut bait. http://fishbites.com/

The restaurant is in an old store and the beer is in the cooler. Grab them as you want. Plus there are no checks it's all on the honor system.
