Has anyone owned, or used a savage Axis youth .243? What are your opinions of it? Pros and cons? I have some concerns of the drop out clip mechanism. I have not been able to put hands on one yet and have only seen pictures.
I currently own a savage 110 in .243 and it is an absolute tack driver. I am just unsure of the quality of the newer savage rifles as mine is approximately 10 years old.

Look in the guns and ammo forum here and use the search feature for savage axis. Not being a smart azz, there are several threads there. With that being said, my daughter loves her Axis in 7-08. No issues with the clip. Wanting to upgrade the scope that came with the package. Many people compare with the Ruger American and there are pros and cons with both. Love the length, weight and recoil(lack thereof) and would think the .243 would be no different.

I've killed all kinds of things with my .243 youth model savage, until it got stolen when I was in college, but it was a hell of a gun, good shooting too. I used 75 grain hollow points and just shot everything in the neck

Bought one last summer for the kids in .243.

So far so good, it's a tack driver. Great trigger and overall feel. Needs a better scope, but that can wait.

Both kids killed a deer with it.

I bought the stainless Axis 243 last year for my kids. It's a great gun and will out shoot any of my other more expensive rifles. With hand loads it will consistently shoot half inch groups. I killed two deer with the rifle and both were DRT.

I take my nephew hunting every year. He killed the below buck in Nov. 2012 with a youth .243 Savage Axis (he was 9 years old) he had his serious face on, LOL. Last year he killed a 10 point with a youth Remington .243 here at the farm.

It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

Bought one for my daughter year before last. She said she wanted to kill a deer, then changed her mind so it hasn`t been used yet besides sighting in but it will drive tacks for sure. I was quite impressed with the accuracy. You won`t be disappointed if you get one.

I just got my boy one. We mounted the scope last weekend but haven't go to shoot it yet. If you get one, go on Amazon and get the weaver rail to go on it. It makes scope mounting much easier. It's a $12 part.

I've handled several and shot a few. Here's my impressions:
Pros - typical Savage accuracy.....outstanding, price
Cons - trigger is horrible, flimsy stock that you can feel flex at pistol grip

At this price point, Axis and Ruger American are the only options worth considering.

I've been looking at getting an Axis for the wife, any of you guys know who may have the best price on them? Academy has them for 259 w/o scope.

That's a good deal. I paid $349 with a cheap scope (bushnell I think) at Gander Mountain. I should have bought the gun only and spent just a little more on a decent scope.

I got lucky. Walmarks in FT Payne had them on a weekend sale for $178.
