Man, my lab has gone to shedding something awful. I know all dogs shed but I mean it's everywhere outside. He never did this until the past 6 months or so. The only thing I've done is change his food. I was getting that stuff from Tractor Supply (4Health) but changed to just regular food from Publix. You think this could be the problem?

I would look into changing food. My lab and german shedder started having yeasty ears(lab),scratching(both),and shedding fiercely(lab never sheds),German shepherd always shed a little but not a bathroom trash can amount every day. I think the food(kirklands signature) changed the ingredient. Fed both dogs that for a very long time no problem. Ended up feeding raw every other day and TOTW on the other days. Both dogs stopped scratching,shedding gone in the lab,shepherd back to normal amount, and energy galore.

I heard if u have bring a dog inside and then outside on a regular basis in the summer they will shed abnormally. Just something I heard an old man say. Doesn't mean it is true.

I personally would feed raw everyday if i could but the price is what ultimately got me alternating every other day. Buying in bulk is the key or good ole leftovers after skinning out after a harvest during hunting season. A lot of good info online about raw feeding. Example:chicken quarter,turkey heart,gizzards,liver or spleen, and green tripe for 1 meal. My lab85lbs would require 2-4lb a day depending on activity level. My shepherd 65lb requires between 1.5-2.5lb depending on activity level. Time consuming a little but weighing and bagging up each dogs monthly meals and freezing ahead of time makes it easier. Trial and error for each dog. My lab is a little sensitive to pork necks yet the shepherd is not.

The amount fed is broke up between 2 daily feedings about 12hrs apart whether raw or kibble with chicken feet or beef trachea mid day for a snack. Both of those are a natural glucosamine source. Yes i spoil my pack but they're both working dogs. The lab is a trained gun dog and the shepherd is in the process of schutzhund and protection training.

Vet had me give my lab Benadryl twice a day. Apparently, he was having some type of allergy to something and he stopped scratching and shedding almost instantly.

My 100 lb GSD sheds something terrible now and he's an inside dog mostly.He's trained for security and protection so inside is where I want him.My wife is goind nuts though.Is there a suplement that will work as god as a raw diet and is the furminator worth buying over your average deshedding brush?

You can try adding a can of salmon,mackerel or sardines(packed in water) to his diet once a week. This might put oil back into his skin and coat to help a little. Make sure to start off slow with amount to gauge his sensitivity to something new. Incase it upsets him bad i would have boiled chicken and canned pumpkin(not pumpkin pie mix)on hand to reset his system if it should get really loose. Also I've read were people use coconut oil in the diet as well(high fat energy source so if weight s a problem use with caution). Also some people use it as a topical for hot spots to help with repair and relax of the skin . What has worked for me might not work for you as I'm not a vet and all dogs are different just like we are different. Good luck with trying to resolve your issues

I have a 6 month old choc lab and I'm in the process of figuring out his hair problems. His hair is so thin in certain spots that you can see skin on his chest, inside of hind legs, on the hocks of his hind legs, and around his eyes. I was feeding him purina puppy chow and I read that a lot of labs have wheat allergies that will make them lose hair so I took him off that and started feeding him diamond naturals large breed puppy food which does not have corn wheat or soy and I put him on a dog allergy pill and it looks like his hair is growing back but he has horrible fleas and scratches all the time even after I sprayed the whole back yard and his 10x10 kennel with permethrin and bathed him in dawn dish soap. Heck I even put the topical stuff on his back and that didn't work so yesterday I mixed up some permethrin at the correct level to use on dogs and sprayed him down with it over his entire body till his skin and hair were saturated and then I let him air dry. I hope that takes care of it. I am about to pull my hair out trying to fix this.

I switched back to Formula 4 food from Tractor Supply and so far it seems to have slowed the shedding somewhat. Maybe it's wishful thinking. Wife says he's still shedding just as much. I don't see as much in his bowl or on the patio though.
