Packing a good punch at any distance is always a good idea. I seldom carry my big heavy 30-06 anymore in favor of my compact little 243. I found it packs enough punch to kill a thin skinned deer.

Never hunted with an AK, but did have a sported up SKS and I killed a good bit of deer with that gun with some 7.62x39 corelocks.

If I had an AK-47 I would quit abusing it and start paying attention to what they're selling for now.

It's a good question, because with as many folks wanting to hunt with an AR, an AK provides much heavier rounds in the 120 grain range that will kill any deer.
