Is this a DIY project or would it be best done by a professional? If so, someone recommend a gunsmith in south Alabama and a reasonable price for such work.

A professional bed and free float job should include bedding the first couple inches of the barrel. So, whatever you might have read above keep that in mind.
I would suggest trying handloads first if that has not already been done.
Amateur bedding jobs probably won't hurt anything but floating a sporter weight barrel could make things worse if it didn't come from the factory that way, i.e. old Remingtons that had a pressure pad out on the end of the stock...
Just depends on the gun. What kind of gun is it?

A poor bedding job can negatively effect accuracy by intoducing stress into the action when screws are torqued.

Rem 700 Sendero that I recently put a B&C Medalist on. The barrel needs free floating it is touching in a spot but haven't had time to work on it. I'm thinking going the professional route to make sure it is done correctly.

The only other thing I would do is bed the recoil lug.

I had my gunsmith glass bed mine. It was $125 and it was well worth it.

You need to free float the barrel on that gun. Here is a decent writeup on how to bed an action. http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/bedding-rifle-1.php
