Brings up a thread I was gonna start. Where are you aiming as SFC3 asked? I've only had one buck drop where it was standing. I attribute that to hitting slightly high and stunning the spine. The rest ran off but were dead within 100yds.

I aim behind the shoulder. I do this because that's where I aim when bow hunting. Seems some aim more forward in the shoulder which I believe results in the drop. I've never tried that shot because with a double lung I know they will be dead in a short distance. Plus it doesn't waste any meat. I admit I don't know if it will result in any wasted meat to make a difference either though.

Shoulder shoot that fool and be done with it. High lung/shoulder gets the aorta too.

I shoot right behind the shoulder and I have had more drop than I have had run off. Seems like the ones that drop where quarrying to me slightly. I had one quarter away from me and he only ran about 20 yards. Right behind the shoulder is where I was always taught to shoot.

I'm takin out his running gear. Ain't much meat on the shoulders. I try to break both front shoulders and watch them plow leaves. They won't be far. I don't have. 260 yet but will shortly when I get time to go get it.

257 I'm tired of shooting these shoulder cannons I been carrying around all over these mountains. Used to kill the crap outta deer with a single shot 243. Then it got to a macho thing I guess all my buddies was trying to get a larger caliber, 7mm, 300, 300wsm, 325wsm. was looking for a smaller caliber and a buddy talked me into a 260. Now gotta go get one of his lol. Gotta decide on the scope now.

Haybale,
Don't forget to take a look at 6.5 swede. Great round that will do exactly what the 260 will do with factory selections but will do a good deal more than that with a good handload.

I've killed four this year with mine and only one has made it past 50 yards. Dropped a big 6pt and 9pt last week in their tracks. The 6pt was shot at 286 yards.

I agree its all in shot placement. I have the same problem with focusing on the shot as if I were using archery gear and hitting low and just behind shoulder. There have been a couple times that I make myself aim high and they drop in their tracks. I have a 308 with same results and see on tv all the time where they shook magnum caliber s and the deer still run off.

+1.

Although I like to say high mid shoulder.

high-mid shoulder = brachial plexus = immediate paralytic shock that bowls them over like a ton of bricks hit them. Takes out the lungs too of course.

The behind the shoulder shot is really more what you do with bow and arrow, not rifle.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.
