I'd like to build a tree house (not attached to tree) on 4x4 posts and use it as a hunting house for next season. Thinking 5'x10' or 10'x10'. Show me what you hunt in and or your tree houses/elevated houses. I need some good ideas.

Thanks,
Matt

10x10 will be way too big. 5x6 or 6x6 is about as big as you want for 1 person to be able to see in all directions. I actually prefer 6' deep and 5' wide. The depth allows for storage behind you and the width allows you to NOT have to move he chair to see all sides.

How many people do you intend to hunt in it? Our biggest is 6x6 and that's HUGE. It'd be good for 2 people or even 3 (like dad mom and a kid) but overkill if mostly for 1 hunter.

I hunted as a guest this year and they put me in a blind that was probably 6'x10'. It was huge. I sat right in the middle and could see all directions easily but literally had to get up and walk to the window when a deer came out.

I'm gonna build one in the Spring so the grandkids can hunt my plot. It'll be 4x8 outside dimensions so I don't have to rip more OSB than necessary. One side will be 8' tall and the other 7' so we'll have headroom and good roof pitch and only lose 1' of OSB across the back. My biggest obstacle will be getting posts in the ground. It's not very far down to rock.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I was wanting to serve two purposes by making it larger than a typical shooting house. I want a tree house, lol! Something I can take the kids with me. And have enough room to sleep in. But not break the bank.

Keep the pictures coming! Who has heat or TV's in they're shoot house/ tree house?

We built an 8x8 8'high walls with aluminum sliding windows and a steel exterior door unit. It was built about 13'off the ground on power poles. There's plenty of room in it.

This is one of ours. Most of them are about 4x4 and have plenty of room. We build them all out of steel so there is no rotting to worry about and they are easy to move. Just hook a strap to the front end loader then pull it over onto a trailer.

I had 30 of these made out of weatherproof composite material. The only lumber are 4x4 posts and two 2x4s for the ladder. Even the rungs are composite.

nice design Jerry, but I hate those small doors to climb in and out especially if you have a backpack on.

If you don't mind my asking how much did it cost to build these and where can I get the materials?

I dont have any pics but we have some nice ones. It helped to have some cabinet builders in the club. 4x6 is plenty big for 2-3 hunters. 10x10 is huge but if your wanting to sleep in it etc then that may be what you need. I will add, if you know where you are going to put it then build the windows accordingly. IE if you are going to put it against a tree line and hunt whats in front of you and beside you then dont put windows behind you. This will prevent deer from sky lining you. Also the windows on the side should be placed a little more forward as to give you a place to hide and not be sky lined from side to side either. Once deer start getting killed, they will look at the houses and you can and will get busted sitting in one if your not careful. Carpeted floors and carpeted shooting rails are nice too. Big doors are a huge plus. I also like the windows in front and beside you to be close together. If your setting it up to cover a big area and long shots are possible then you can use the side windows to help brace the rifle/elbow for a more steady shot. Sun/rain visors over the outside of the windows are really nice to have as well. If you gonna go all out, then go all out right? I would also recommend not setting it right on top of the green field. Also it never hurts to let brush grow up around or in front of the house as to give you some cover and the ability to sneak in while there is deer on the field. Next time I'm down I'll take some pics of some of my favorite houses.

If your decoy doesnt have holes in it, your not letting him get close enough... J.H.

Appreciate all the good tips and tricks. Plus the nice pictures. Keep them coming!

The more I think about 10x10 I don't think that is necessary. Maybe 5x10 or 6x10. I'm thinking I could Just build it sturdier and bunk hang a couple of hammocks to get more space.

Carpet on the floor is a good idea. I'm intending on eventually insulating it. Insulation is cheap and that would cut down on the noisy kid transmission if I take one during hunting season.

I was thinking 4x4 pressure treated wood for the columns and then 2x8's for the floor joists. Plywood for the subfloor. Then 2x4 wood studded walls. Might have to reinforce with some cross bracing if I hang hammocks. I'm 205 lbs.

Anyone ever have they're house knocked over by high winds? What do you do to prevent this? concrete foundation, etc. angle the main columns?

Placement wise it would be about 40 to 50' up a hill from the greenfield we hunt on. Then we have another clearing another 100 to 75' up the hill from that that we usually camp at. Planning on scouting the location a little more when hunting season concludes and before the spring growth starts to put leaves on the trees and brush. Probably take a ladder and lean it up on some trees to see where the best vantage point is. I want to be in the woods but with a clear view of the field. longest distance shot to the field would be 150' (to the far end).

I'm going to shingle the roof. Rain on a tin roof would be louder than I want.

Obviously I have a lot of ideas. The budget would be limited so I'll likely do this thing in phases.

What is skylining? Is that where they could see your silouette through the window?

Mobile home tie downs work good for securing.

Skinny, we came to the same conclusion. Made a design change on the newest version.
