Ok, I have hunted a few times on BIG clubs, like 3000 acres and larger, and not saying they all do it like this, BUT the few I been on have. We would all meet up, decide where standers are gonna go, who and how many dogs are getting dropped out, go put out standers. Then go drop out 15 dogs and just let em go.. Now this is fine if that what you like, but we do it a little different. OK, we get around and get us a game plan, the guy we hunt with is on the farm everyday of the week. He knows where what deer is or at least the area. SO, we see which way the wind is blowing, most times when we jump the deer, it puts its nose into the wind, and goes. Then we decide which stander is going where, never matters really, we all get along. I am about the youngest except one 18 year old, so we usually get where we can cover two spots and move around to catch the dogs. Then we decide which dogs to take, no more than 3 at a time, that's a lot for one person to catch, usually it's just two dogs. Well we all leave out and go get in our spots, some of the older men, carry dove stools to sit on while waiting. The driver doesn't let out the dogs until all standers are ready and in position, now as a stander you need to be quite and easy slipping in your spot. I have seen ALOT of time a deer get up about 50 yards from you once you stop, and a lot of deer will "slip out" in front of the driver once he drops the tail gate. OK, all standers are in place, we tell the driver we are ready, he lets the dogs out and heads our way, usually around 200 to 800 yards away. The dogs usually jump, fairly quick, the driver has the best chance at the deer, seeing it get up in front of him. when the dogs jumps the deer, he gets on radio and tells every one the dogs has jumped, and I am watching on the GPS, seeing where the dogs are going, but we can usually hear them, when they get the deer hot, and headed to you, you get ready. Everybody makes there own decision to kill the deer or not, may be to small, or may not be what they want to kill. once you see the deer cross, you get where it crossed and wait on the dogs, when they come out you holler at them and call them, then we leash them. I sometimes take my foot and kick back the leaves to expose the dirt, so the dogs lose the trail for a second, so I have a better chance to catch the dog. But when you kill the deer, they stop at it. It's ALOT harder to catch the dogs than people think, it really is, especially if you let the deer go or get by you. sometimes the deer will smell you and turn, and go a different direction, or a older doe or buck will go a different route every time. But most deer have their "escape" routes they take and that's where the standers get. We catch the dogs 95% of the time, the other 5% isn't fun, but we do our very best to stop them. And if our dogs get on others land, and they catch them, they call the GW, we get a written warning on our dog permit, after three they pull the permit. So if someone's dogs are getting on your land just catch the dog and call the GW, after three times they CAN'T dog hunt anymore. "Not saying the dog should ever be on your land." Not sure if this makes sense, but it's how we do it, and will do it tomm. Just trying to clear up a few things for yall.

Every now and then you will be lucky enough to have good neighbors who don't call the game warden every time they hear a dog near by thumbup . In all seriousness being that me and my dad hunt pretty close to DW and we never have a lick of trouble with them. They are some of the good ones, and kill some mighty fine bucks on top of that!

The world needs more people holding deer in pictures, and less people holding cameras in front of mirrors.

I have never really dog hounted. It does seem to be a more proactive approach to deer hunting. Instead of climbing a tree and waiting to see what comes by. I guess my only real concern is shooting at a running deer. I have rabbit hunted over dogs and the rabbits are running mostly when you shoot them. If running dogs for deer hunting is similar. I better understand the sport.

They use to hunt dogs back behind my place, growing up dog hunting I loved it. I would get down out of my tree or get out the back door and get in a good spot when they got past them. And 9 times out of 10 the dogs got past them. I never called the GW's and caught the dog's up when I could and put them in my kennel. People just aint like they used to be.

DW are you getting a lot of pressure from non dog hunters right now? You seem to be doing a lot of self preservation explaining. Nearly ever week you have a thread about how good dog hunting is, how you do it right, how other hunters should love it like you do....

I grew up running dogs in south MS. Never shot a deer while running dogs but the group I hunted with did. It was lots of fun. Never a dull moment. Now, it was hard keeping the dogs from getting away but they never would get too far.

The woods down there were a LOT different than where I hunt now. Nothing ever died from winter and you might get a 50-60 yard shot. I wouldn't mind nd doing it again sometime.

Daniel is a fine model for the sport, I ain't trying to speak for him, but I think he is just doing his part to try to educate some folks to it. Dog hunting gets a bad rap because of the actions of a few. If all folks did it like DW, it would be fine.

I haven't hunted with dogs seriously in 25 years. We mostly hunted fairly small corners and tracts with 3-6 hunters max. Probably had 12000 plus acres that were open permit that was lightly hunted besides us. Ran mostly big walkers. The occasional odd pack like blue ticks, etc. two of the best we ever had were walker/bird dog mix. Rarely turned loose more than 3 dogs at a time. We would look for fresh "buck" tracks in the morning to turn the dogs loose on and then up in the morning we would just turn loose "blind". We were way more into numbers killing than anything else. Killed pretty much every legal deer we could. We killed lots of big bucks as well. Was tremendous fun. Many late afternoons I would take off walking stomping out tracks so we would be able to tell fresh ones the next morning. Two main reasons I changed to primarily still type hunting was that we had to a start large club to continue to have enough land to dog hunt and I dislike large crowds for the most part and that I had the big buck bug bad and really only wanted to hunt them. I still miss it though the way we did it originally. It just takes lots of land and really good dog hunters that can catch the dogs, etc.not to bother your neighbors. It was not unusual if those big walkers got past us for them to run a deer for miles and miles. It's good to see that there's still some areas like Daniels that can still have some good dog hunting. You can also see that even on this board that his presence and demeanor has improved the attitudes toward dog hunting.

We hunt about the same way but on larger tracts of land. Everybody has a GPS so the can see where the dogs are. We only turn out a couple of dogs at a time. Most of them wear a shock collar to and will stop when you scold them. If it's a buck or nobody sees the deer then we jump in the trucks and line the next section. We hunt close to the still hunt area so we have to be able to stop the dogs.

take your kids hunting and you won't be hunting your kids

Here comes the ole puss back out in you.. I never have said anybody should love it. Matter of fact I aint ever put down how anybody wanted to hunt legally. I was just explaining how we hunted, so some people could see how others done it. Is that against the rules?? Go back and search my threads and how many in "weeks" i have made a post on how good dogging is. We are always getting a lot of pressure from other hunters, but most are looking for reasons to whine and moan, cause they haven't ever killed a big buck. Hell I can't even make a simple deer dogging post with out other hunter crying... slap

How far do you put the standers from where the dogs are released?

May be the dumbest question you have ever been asked about dog huntin but have you ever seen a dog that would run a buck only?

Yes, I actually have, Matter of fact when I first got red she didn't run but two does all season long. But she has hunted with other dogs since then, and snow she will just run a deer, but the guy hunted her by herself..

Where I hunt people's yard dogs run on a daily basis and if I can I like to slip in front of them and see what's coming. I've killed a couple pretty good bucks this way and both times it was the same little mutt. It has ran a couple of little bucks by that I've passed on but have never seen anything other than a buck in front of it.

I have a dog club next to my club for the last 12 years. I get along with their club president and try to maintain a good relationship. They try hard to do it right, but I have to allow them to retrieve a loose dog once or twice a year. They have never had to round up one of my club members for me to retrieve. I feel I have to accommodate them without them ever having to accomadate my club. Doesn't mean we ever have cross words, just a one sided relationship.

Not puss and I'm not crying. I could care less if you dog hunt. Doesnt affect me at all. In fact I love watching all working dogs work. Whether it's a pointer, retriever, deer dog, sheep dog.... The post just looks to me like your constantly trying to defend your self, and your response to my post shows just that very defensive. That's why I asked if you were getting pressure.
