First post here.

I'm looking to go turkey hunting in December with my brother. We're open to hunting about anywhere within the specified counties, but since we don't know anyone who owns land we're thinking public land. We're not keen on tresspassing; most folks tend to look down on that.

I've never hunted or hiked the Talladega or Shoal Creek districts, so I know nothing about specific locations. I certainly not demanding you tell me about your favorite spot. I'm just asking for some pointers.

Up here in Bankhead, the NFS keeps several dozen openings specifically for turkey and deer hunters. That, or closed roads, are my favorite setups. Know of anything like that?

Thanks!

Way to make an entrance, man!

If you've hunted turkeys in the past, you know you have to scout. Fall turkeys are harder to pattern and harder to find unless you've got some on camera. Killing a fall gobbler the legal way on public land in Alabama would be a feat indeed.

You're just gonna have to wear out a little boot leather and scout.

Good luck!

THERE IS TURKEYS IN TALLADEGA NATIONAL FORREST...

the problem is this and I am in no way bashing dog running for deer. there is several different groups that chase deer with dogs , by doing this they are pushing the turkeys on to the managent area, like I said I trapped hollins in another post and had no problem locating turkeys.fall turkey hunting is poor due to that reason, now in the spring that's a all new ball game, there is three water sheds that I fish and the second one has a green field and you can hear those gobblers every morning at day break, I camp there and crappie fish for a couple weeks at a time , also you can take a small boat and hunt the Talladega national forrest on the back side and still have a chance of getting a turkey both in the fall or spring.

pm me for any other questions

by the way lake howard is closed on mondays

I know I will have to scout. But the problem is I don't even know where to begin scouting.

Thanks for the responses anyway, and good hunting.

I know lots of places amd I still have to get out and locate them.
I have found only a very few hotspots after many years.
One of which is a roost tree that has been used for a loooong time.

Spend time in the woods. Your eliminating areas as much as you are locating birds.
Takes time.

Find recent sign, and do a lot of listening while slipping, fall birds are loud and there is usually quite a few flocked together.

Read the regs for the wma's. If I have read them right in the past, all listed in the fall counties only allow bow hunting them.

This is true of WMA's in the counties that allow fall hunting, but not all National Forest land is part of a WMA.

I will be 100 percent honest with you. There are birds on The National Forest. All of it. They are the craziest turkeys I have ever hunted. They are hard enough to hunt in the spring. Why would anyone in their right mind want to hunt them in the fall? Someone else mentioned dog hunters. They are correct. I would not even attempt to hunt turkey's on the weekend on NF land. You will get messed up by dogs. No doubt about it.

Thanks anyway. I'll take a pass on this year and look at it again late next summer.

Damn. This sounds like trying to get a gun permit in NYC or DC. Make it just about as difficult as possible to achieve, say "if you want it, there's your way" and then have just about everyone say to hell with it.

The problem is that I live two and a half hours away and my work schedule is such that I have a hard time getting in there to scout. I wasn't asking for anyone to do my work for me, and I wasn't asking for anyone's special honey hole. I simply wanted to get a feel for where to start. Unfortunately, smart alec answers like "TNF, Talladega division, Talladega county." don't help much.

So to heck with it for this year. I'll try to get down there next spring or summer and nose around a bit. At least that way I'll know where to begin when fall season hits.
