As always' I'm running out of time(work work work) and was wondering if I had to wait until Oct.18th to plant would this be to late? also what would you plant this late being on a budget? I was thinking the basic oats, triticale and mix in some clover.radish or such..it's only 7-8 small fields none over 1/4 acre or so..in Tuscaloosa county

Budget and afraid of getting in late? I would plant rye grain every time.

Not too late- that's when I typically plant. You will be fine- gives you a month of growth before season opener.

I probably will not plant until the last week of October in Jackson county by design.

My personal preference is to plant around the middle of October but I am in the minority but I rarely get hit by these long dry spells like we are in...

Plant you some rye and what ever else you want to mix in and you will be fine.

That's the way I feel working 7 days a week I started planting at 6 yesterday and finished at 830 but I knew I had to get it done now or if I waited much longer I was gonna be out of luck.

Hope to finish up my fields this weekend.

I've planted a week before gun season and had nice fields by the end of December. Actually they were planted twice that year. We planted Memorial Day weekend which seems to be the norm around here. They came up and then no rain for a month or better.

We quit planting Memorial Day weekend after that.

You mean Labor day, don't you? Memorial day is in May. If you meant Memorial day, then no wonder your plots failed. LOL

We are talking about re-planting some of our plots. No rain in the forecast for at least 10 days tho, so there is no need to plant any time soon.

Did you have plots that have failed due to lack of moisture, or from deer hammering them?
