I believe they make a granular that you can put out as a preventive. The only true preventative I know of is acelapryn (sp). Everything else is residual from an insecticide, the chemical above is taken up by the plant

thanks guys. Dang Fur, that's serious damage there. I did the soapy water trick yesterday afternoon, and they came to the surface quickly. Probably 50 or more in a square yard. Then last night, I went out and saw several eating on the grass, like in your picture. Also noticed a bunch of the moths that they turn in to. They are normally only active late, early and at night. My brother took the picture that I posted around noon a couple Saturdays ago. It was sunny and around 88-90. I have never seen them that active during sunny weather. We had 50-100 per square FOOT. The best thing to do for next year, as a preventative is to burn your yard off early in the spring. Their eggs will overwinter on the grass. We had armyworms every year for 3-4 years until we started burning our hay fields. We had not had them since, until this year, when we didn't burn our hay fields. I had them in my yard 2 years in a row and have burned it off every spring since. Burning is great for the bermuda as well.

be prepared for a awful smell around your house for a few days if they are as thick as what fur showed. You ain't wrong. Smelled like a dead animal.

I imagine it would sound like popcorn if you torched the field right now. I swear when I scouted cotton, you could hear them munching on bolls before you went into the field. They were easy to kill once the plane sprayed the field tho.
