In the last 3.5 years, we've tried to build a decent orchard. We've planted the following trees: apple, pear, crabapple, plum, persimmon, sawtooth oak and American Chestnut. We've also planted blueberries and blackberries. The first planted were the Sawtooths. We planted (24) 2 to 3 foot whips in February, 2011, and are seeing sign of our first acorns this year on 4 of the trees.
To finish our plan, we want to add muscadines, figs, and Pecan Trees. I'd like to know if you guys have any particular varieties you'd recommend, as well as sources. These particular plants are not offered by the nurseries used on the items already planted.

I'm also interested in figs and muscadines. See my thread on orchard help and also check out my link to isons for varieties. What kind of blackberries did you go with? Have they produced yet and how well? How many blueberries did you plant and how are they doing? I've never messed with them at all but my kids love them so I guess I need to add them to mine as well.

I've already been following your thread on orchard help. Trying to learn all I can as well. Our blackberries and blueberries came from The Wildlife Group at Tuskegee, along with all of our fruit trees. We started with one of their Wildlife Packages and have built from there. I've been very satisfied with them and their product.
For blackberries, we went with a mixture of Arapaho and Navajo. We put 6 plants out two years ago, followed by 12 plants last year. Judging by this years output of the original 6, that will be more than our family needs. They really put out the fruit this year. They are thornless and have minimal seeds.
We've been less successful with the blueberries. We have 18 plants, which are a mixture of Climax, Tiftblue and Gulf Coast. The plants have been fruitful, but I've done a poor job of protecting them from the birds.

I like the turkey figs. There are some improved varieties that have huge figs, BUT those figs have an opening on the end, I call it the belly button. Flies, gnats and ants get in the open ends ruining the fruit.
If you know someone with a fig bush that will let you break off some first year growth, there is no need to ever buy a fig bush. Right before bud break in the spring, snap off the past years growth, dip it in rooting hormone and stick it in a pot of damp potting soil. Keep the soil moist and it will grow. I typically put two stems in each pot in case one doesn't make it.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Thanks Fur, I'll try to find some Turkey Figs. Back to the original question, but about pecan's. Any particular variety y'all would recommend? Elliott - that seems to be the variety most planted now
