We set our thermostat at 78 when we are going to be out of the house for any length of time. We have recently, on a few occasions, come home and turned the thermostat down and it take 20-30 minutes for the inside to kick-on. The fan on the outside unit runs during this delay. When it is operating Normally it usually only takes a few seconds or minutes for it to come on.

Other info that might help:

1)House is 1.5 years old. (Parts are warranted but just out of Labor warranty.)
2)Foam insulated.
3)Amana Heat Pump.

The first tech that came out did a diagnostics and could not replicate the delay. He is acting like nothing is wrong and we are crazy..

I need some ALDEER Expert diagnosis.

I had to have a starter put on mine 3 weeks ago. Something about high pressure blah blah blah

Question- Does your system have a variable speed blower motor? If you don't know- Can you post a model number of the Air Handler?

1. You may have a fan Relay/relay board in the Air handler intermittenly acting up causing the delay.

2. You could have a intermittently bad T-stat that may not be sending the fan signal(g wire) for the blower fan to run until after the 20-30 mins you've posted.

3.You may have an issue with the blower motor itself or capacitor. These are unlikely to me & a good tech should be able to figure out pretty quick if these were the case.

* A model number or info on whether you have a variable speed/ constant torque motor would be very helpful though. Several factors could come into effect depending.

During the "delay" do you hear any uncommon noises coming from the indoor fan area?

I'll have to go in the attic and get the info.

The only noise I hear (You have to be in attic to hear it) inside, is coming from the copper tubing, you can feel the liquid running in it too.

I went in the attic to check if the kill switch had activated due to pan filling with water. Pan was bone dry though.

Depending on which motor set up the system has, it could be severaly different issues.

At one time Amana used "X13" motors.

These motors were junk industry wide- Very notorious for running randomly, delaying, shutting off and not working at all. I'm unsure if your system has this motor though.

Ok how about this one.

Imagine playing baseball in a universe (not ours!) where the Planck constant is 0.70 J·s. What would be the uncertainty in the position of a 0.55 kg baseball that is moving at 17 m/s along an axis if the uncertainty in the speed is 1.5 m/s?

grin

From the model number posted, It looks like you have a standard PSC motor. A quick look at the schematic shows only an Electronic Fan delay relay controlling the motor inside The unit its self. If it keeps giving you problems, It may be worth while to have your AC guy just replace the relay. Unless he sees it acting up it will be hard to pinpoint for him. Of course, It Could also be the Tstat or something extremely funky going on. How often does it do this?

Very Sporadic. First time was around a year ago, I cut the power to reset it. After I done that it worked. Never had another problem until about 4 months ago. It has done it 4 or 5 times in the last two months. It appears to be getting worse.

I think last time it did it, I only remember hearing a single click at the Tstat, when it would not turn on. Normally it sounds like a double click when it starts up.

Sounds like bad tstat.if its digital. Something easy to check that goes out alot is the capacitor. Take loose and check the microfarreds with meter. Also check deicing board. And head pressure relay. But i aint an expert in residential units. If it was me I'd replace tstat and if that dont fix it take tstat back

Sounds like a bad thermostat....try doing this, pull the cover off the stat so you can see the wires, tie the red green and yellow together next time it gives you trouble, if it solves the problem replace the thermostat..from what your saying I would say that is the problem...usually when you have a sporadic problem like that it's something simple, with that being said 9times outta 10 if it's something major like a compressor, fan motor (especially if it's not a x13) or a major component it either works or it dont..start troubleshooting the easy stuff and work your way up from their

Tstat or fan relay. Or a partially broken wire from tstat to air handler or bad connection at one or the other

Another reccomendation would be to not turn your thermostat up, more than a couple of degrees, while your not there. When your house gets hot the extended time it will have to run when you drop it down, will offset any money saved from running it up.

A bad Tstat should not call the outside unit on and not the inside unit. It has to be fan relay or loose wire problem.
Might also check fuse on printed circuit board. these can be bad and not show blown. Vibration makes contact and then loses it.

I have also seen a couple of times where the float switch was wired into the "load" side of the transformer so that the Inside Unit would shut down if the drain line became clogged but condenser would still run. This will keep your floor or ceiling dry but is very bad on the compressor.

One of the installers came out yesterday and looked at everything. Still they cannot replicate the problem, he says: That if the outside unit comes on without the inside blower coming on for any length of time that It would freeze-up on the coils on inside unit, and that when it did kick on it would not blow cold air. I haven't noticed that at all. When unit comes on finally it cools the house down fast. They cannot replicate the problem with any diagnostics and do not want to just start replacing parts till they get to the problem. They want to come out when it happens, we have called when it happened but they never have had anyone available. I told him that its funny that I'm the only one that this problem has ever happened to.

Thanks, but looking for advice to FIX the problem. Plus, That is a Myth, especially for a Foam insulated house....
