I would hold out for a 4.0 IMO.

Not many engines have been proven more bulletproof and reliable that the 4.0. I know some guys that have used them in Cherokees for tow vehicles for petty heavy boats too. They are pretty torquey

I've got an old 98 cherokee now, that I drive to work and back. It will pull my 20 foot stratos ok, but not like my yukon. The 4.0 is one of the best engines I have ever had.

I have had several TJs, as has been said, the 2.5 is a lil weak, especially if you put larger tires on it and don't regear and if you re gear the rear you need to do the front axle also. You'd like to get one with the 4.0 and d44 rear axle and 3.73 or 4.11 gears if you are planning on running any tire up to 33" , and the ax5 or ax15 5 speed. I believe but may be wrong that 01 had the 0331 head which had problems by design.
