Here are pics. of our Eagle Beans I drilled the first week of May. They have been lacking rain until the last 10 days or so. I expect they will jump pretty good now. Some corn stragglers got out into the field from the edge. I plant two passes with the 10ft. drill around the edge of our fields. We have about 8.5-9 acres of the Wildlife Managers Mix from Eagle planted at ~38 lbs. per acre.

Field looks great. How do y'all get access to a drill? Local farmer?

We rented this one from the Co-op in Albertville. I used to have access to them at my old job. Some extension offices have them, you just have to check with each office for availability.

I will add this important note: If you rent a drill, you will probably have to work on it a bit to make sure each row will be planted. The most important part is to clean out the drill. More than likely there is some sort of grass seed you DO NOT want in your food plots in those drills. Spend an hour or two and clean it out GOOD!

what do the Eagle Brand cost per bag? We are going to plant 4 or 5 acres in one field this year and see how they do.

It depends on what varieties you get. Large Lad and Big Fellow varieties run ~$79-$89 per 50lbs. and the mixed varieties like Wildlife Managers Mix, Habitat Haven or Game Keeper usually run ~$95-$100 per 40lbs. depending on your source of course.

I usually get mine from Wilborns in Cullman but I ran late ordering this year and wasn't going to plant but another club member bought them somewhere and I'm not sure what he paid.

If you haven't planted yet and you don't have the seed already, you may not plant them. They had a huge run on their seed this year from the cattle industry. I talked to Brad that owns Eagle the last week of April and they were out of everything but the mixes and they were going fast.

I know the Co-op system is out, I talked to a guy that works at their warehouse about getting some for a friend down south and he said they were out and not getting any more.

After these rains we have gotten the last week, I bet the beans will have grown like crazy! Looking Great.

Deer eat mine to the ground as soon as they make a leaf. I just don't have enough field area to plant that will allow them to grow to any size. This is a good problem to have though.

NightHunter, we planted about a week before you. Broadcast and ran cultipacker over them. Fertilized at planting at about 150lbs/acre triple 13, then again about 4 - 5 weeks later at 150lbs/acre. We also sprayed same time 2nd fertilize.

We have a solid stand, but seems they have not grown in past 3 weeks even with good amount of rain over past couple of weeks. They are all about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of your pics as of last weekend.

We've never planted this area of our land, but did soil tests a year or so ago showed lime was good, just needed fertilizer.

Only two things i can think of was sprayed too early (which was time frame we were told; although may should have waited since planted a bit early) or shouldn't have split fertilizer. Weeds for most part are controlled.

Any thoughts that may help get them back going?

It does not matter when you spray them, I don't care what anyone tells you. I have sprayed them within a couple days of germination, at the day of planting, two weeks after germination, you get the picture. The RU ready gene in there, you will not hurt them by spraying too early.

My concerns would be the soil and how well it holds nutrients and water. If it is soil that leaches pretty bad and has a low organic matter component you are going to struggle until you build it up. I suggest you focus on building up your soil over the next couple of years.

I also put all my fertilize at once but that should not be your problem.

Did you inoculate your beans? That makes a huge difference. Also these water logged or poor drained soils will discolor and stunt them too.

I agree with NH. We just started hitting some really hot temps here lately. Its during these stress periods that your soil's shortcomings will really show themselves. Growing healthy plants starts with growing healthy soil. Nice looking stand of beans NH. smile

We did inoculate, and we are growing a good stand of millet and Pennington dove mix right beside the beans. Planted the dove mix same day, millet about 3 weeks ago. Planted about 4 acres of beans, 4 acres millet and 2 acres of Pennington dove mix. You may be onto something with water logged, it's well drained, but have had a lot of rain since growth stopped.

Thanks for the help.
