I planted a patch on Sunn Hemp this weekend mixed with Iron Clay Peas. I'm curious to see if the deer will eat it.

huntin the big lease
We planted Iron Clays two years ago and the deer let them fully mature, they were probably 6 feet tall bc of corn stalks and within two weeks they were little stubs sticking out of the ground.. Completely gone!!! Its gonna be hard to bush hog it the first time while you wait on the peas to mature.. Tangled up mess but a mess full of protein

Keep us updated that sunn hemp sounds like some good stuff.

The only problem with planting it with a companion crop, the first time you plant it, is that your deer may not browse it hard in the beginning and this stuff grows fast and needs to be mowed down to 18", when it reaches 6'. If you don't the stalks can get so big, it can cause a problem incorporating them into the soil, if you like to till or plow. Some people reported heavy browsing, some not so much in the first year. Mine got 6' tall in about 60 days. The next time i planted it, they browsed it well. Pea's can be mowed, but we wouldn't want to do that and remove all that food for them.

I planted some sunn hemp last year and it did grow well, but my deer didn't browse it much at all. I let it grow up really tall, bushhogged it and turned it under. I guess I did get the benefit of the nutrients it puts in the ground, but I couldn't tell a difference in that field versus any of my others during the fall.

I've planted it before and didn't get great browsing, in one location, but did in another. I planted some yesterday, when it gets 6' tall, i'll bushhog it down to 18" and let it grow again. I may cut it back one more time at the end of september, and then top sew my fall seeds into the standing hemp. It will provide some vertical cover in that plot. It takes the deer getting used to it. It does add a looooooot of organic matter to your soil.
