My Grandfather passed away this past Wednesday, and I'm still in shock about it all. I had prom with my girlfriend of 3.5 years last night, and she wanted to go turkey hunting for her first time today. We went to bed around 11 last night and woke up and left Bham around 3:00 this morning. I had not been hunting in 3 weeks, and was going in blind. We got there around 5:00, which was very early. I decided we would set up along a field that a bird had fooled us several times this season. I put my hen out there in the dark and sat down. At around 540 he gobbled, and was right on the edge of the field. It made me jump and she couldn't believe it! I was shocked to hear that he was right there out of all the places. I gave him a few tree yelps on my grandfathers slate call, and he gobbled back. He was hammering at all my clucks and everything. He shut up for a little bit before he finally flew down. He flew down onto the field and never gobbled again. He spitted and drummed all the way to us, and I let the Longbeard 6's fly. I immediately ran to him and was so excited. I told Alecia to come on, because she was was still by the tree. I gave her a big hug and started to cry, because I knew my grandfather was watching down on me. He raises me on that place, and I was using his gun that he let me have. This was also my first ever kill without my grandfather or my turkey hurting buddy (joel) by my side doing the majority of the calling. It was very emotional, and I just couldn't do anything but cry and think of him. Alecia got to see it all on her first time turkey hunting and I was just so excited. He was dead at 6:05. I'm already back home in birmingham, and am gonna grab a nap. He was a 2 year old, but he did his thing like a boss. I will never forget today. It was the most special hunt I've ever had, and I will never forget it. Turkey hurting is soemthing I am so happy that I've been introduced to. Love sharing stories with y'all.

Thanks for sharing. I too am sorry for you loss. This are the moments in life we remember, great you grandfather spent time with you in the woods.
Remember him on every hunt, he would like it I think.
Good stuff
Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Great story. I read it to my wife, who does not hunt, and we both had tears in our eyes before I finished.
Never give up something that you love for a dollar. In the end, you may be wealthy but inside, you are broke.

Awesome story, sorry for your loss but congrats on your kills. You got you a foot woman there that wants to hunt with ya. She seems like a keeper.

Thanks guys! Y'all's comments mean more to me than you could imagine. It was the first time I've gotten emotional in the woods, and I still am in disbelief. I know he is smiling down on me. Man what a day!
