Go to Toyota Nation or Yota Tech. You can read all about the general problems people have. I have a 1st generation Tundra that has issues and have found a lot of helpful fixes for some of its quirks. For example, some Toyota trucks have chronic axle seal problems. Some have brake systems that are too small etc. Do your research and you can make an informed decision. The newer models may not have some of these issues but I would check it out.

That will be my next truck for sure. My son and a good friend both have the 4 door Tacoma and love them. No issues on either part. I have pulled my 20ft. boat with my sons and that 4.0L V6
does a better job towing that several V8 trucks I've had.
Plenty of room, plenty of power and around 20 to 22 MPG average.
Probably the best resale value and looks of any mid size truck.

If he has a 4.0 getting 20+ mpg, he has a rare gem. I drove an '07 and now a '13 and I don't think either one of them would touch 20mpg if you averaged driving 25 mph and cut the engine going downhill.

The Tacoma will be my next truck as well. My son turns 16 today and last week I found a 1999 Tacoma with 77,000 miles for him. We both love it, plenty of power for a 4cylinder.

2012 double cab prerunner trd offroad package. Love it. 20/21mpg every tank. 65kmiles not a hiccup. I called toyota and asked about the oil. The rep says toyota reccommends synthetic 0W20. The manual says use conventional 5W20 I think. That was odd to me that the manual says one thing and the customer rep says something different.

2008 and 2010 are the same truck (minus a couple of minor cosmetic differences). I'm driving a 2008 DC 4WD, bought it in 2009 with 21,000 miles. It's got 107,000 miles now, pulling a 20' boat, never had a stitch of problems with it. I just put new spark plugs in it, changed the coolant around 70,000 miles, never have even put brakes on it. Best truck I've ever had. But like was said above, it wouldn't get 20MPG if it was falling off a cliff.

Got this '96 for my son a few months before his 16th... First pic is the day the got it. 2nd pic is several months later when he made it a "real truck"

He took off the canopy, mud flaps, badges, bug deflector and several other things, added tires, lift, subs, tool box, and cab guard.. Can't think of what else he had done

Here's my 2011 the week I got it... About the only things I have done to it are removed the badges, took off the TRD stickers on the sides, cut 3" off the front mud flaps, and added a tool box. Both get aeound 18mpg.

'14 TRD double cab short bed 4x4. V6 auto. It will get 20+ mpg consistently if you run non ethanol gas and stay off the interstate. I wouldn't be surprised if it got 22 or better if you took a long two lane road trip and kept it under 65mph

It is not as strong, fast, or have as much room as a "Big 3" half ton truck. It also cost me $30k when a big 3 1/2 ton equivalent would have shaded $40k

I can run it 5 years and if I keep the miles under 90k I can get the biggest part of my money back. NOTHING on the road holds its value like a Toyota Tacoma. I bought mine with the intention of giving it to my (now) 8 year old son when he turns 16. I fully expect it to be running and reliable then.

If it's a 4X4, double cab V-6 getting 20-22, rare gem is right. That's 4 cylinder numbers in a 4X4.
