I would like to try bowhunting a nice WMA that is bowhunting only and has the most big bucks taken in recent years in Alabama. I would not be able to scout prior to hunt, but none the less would love to give it a try. Any suggestions?

Is it Hunting Season Yet?

There is a bunch of bow hunting only corps of engineers land along the Tombigbe river. I haven't hunted it but I shotgun hunt close to it and have seen some nice deer.

Barbour Co. WMA. Jones Bluff corp. property. Not sure if Barbour Co. is bow only but prudy sure it is except for a couple gun hunts per season.

Barbour would be a good one.... The entire county has been on a three on one side rule for about ten years now....Very good chance of getting a mature buck...

SECOND THOUGHTS: Fireman, truth is the chance of killing a nice deer on your first trip to a new place are almost none. You can get topo maps and satalite pics, but having a friend or someone here show you a spot would really be the only way to have much chance. What I'd do if solo is... pick a WMA with a good track record, download a topo (http://www.mytopo.com/search.cfm?type=pns), get satalite (Google Maps), look for creeks and bottoms. Then go with the intention of study. Make repeated trips. This way your scouting and hunting at the same time. And don't set your bar to high. Take a doe. She be a fine prize for the freezer and for you. Hope this helps.

I would not reccomend bankhead if you don't have time to scout.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

SWAN CREEK WMA, a lot of nice bucks running around. The archery only hunt lasts approx. 4 weeks. I have stuck a deer there on opening morning for 6 years straight. The deer do feel the pressure and become harder to kill after the first week. I would suggest you have a bicycle, or small Jon boat, chest waders, and a good expandable broadhead. A lot of water to deal with. Good luck!!
