I handled one the other day and seems like it would be a great, cheap beater rifle. Anyone have one or shot one? I was thinking a .308 with a low power good quality scope would be a great little woods/tree stand gun out to say 200yrds. Thoughts? The stock has storage for my TP. Or I could use it to haul Josh's deer out in.

That'll work.
I bought an old Remington 760 in .308 that was already scratched and had some rust pitts on the exterior...barrel and action was perfect though. Got it at Mark's years ago for $190.00. Put on a used Zeiss Conquest scope that had some wear marks and a couple scratches but the glass was perfect. I've added a few more scratches and dings and it doesn't even bother me at all. I'll drag it through briars and thick stuff when I stalk hunt and no worries.

Look at the CVA hunter series at Academy. They are 199.00 and come with a 4.5 lb, nice trigger. I had one in a 7mm 08 and it was a shooter. I handled one the other day and seems like it would be a great, cheap beater rifle. Anyone have one or shot one? I was thinking a .308 with a low power good quality scope would be a great little woods/tree stand gun out to say 200yrds. Thoughts? The stock has storage for my TP. The one I had shot about a 1.2 inch group, but I never tried to play with other factory loads. That was plenty good for a single shot IMO. It was a nice piece for the money...and great for what you are wanting. They had them in .308, .243, and 7mm 08. I "think" the had one with a fluted/heavy barrel for about 50 bucks more. Dang Burbank, thanks. Just looked them up. Has rifle sights too. How well did it group/shoot?

I've got the cva in 308 I think I got it for 175 ish when I worked at academy. It shot better than I could hold it with a 4x bushnell banner dusk to dawn or something like that scope at 100 yards. A guy at work has an h&r ultra hunter in 25-06 that'll shoot 3 shot groups in the same hole at 100
We will burn that bridge when we get there

Thats what Im wanting something for SC. My TC is the heavy 7mag and alot to lug around not to mention more gun than I need most times. That's why I put the 7 mag up after thirteen years and bought a Thompson Center Venture in a 308. I can drive nails with this rifle without dislocating my shoulder.

I call them "loaners", and also back up guns. When I'm hunting more than an hour from home I always bring a back up/loaner rifle even when by myself. Have had two hunts turn out successful because of having an extra gun that otherwise would have been wasted. First one my Mauser choked on my reloads and second one I dropped my rifle while bringing it up in a tree. The sling keeper came loose about twenty feet up and it hit hard on a tree root. Broke a scope mount. Both times I had this backup 1968 Winchester 30-30. I put a Tasco scope on it for hunting. Have a total of $212 in it including scope and mount. I always take an extra rifle also. Never had to use it but JIC. I have a double rifle case may as well put two in it.

Went and handled both today. Really like the CVA. It feels great and is super compact. Im still in limbo. They had 2 left...one in 7.08 which is what I would probably get.

I bought a $199 Stevens 200 (Savage)7-08 for a beat around "truck" gun. It has become a favorite that I hunt with alot although I own nicer rifles.
Take your kids hunting instead of hunting your kids.
