To stay under $500 and it not be a pump is gonna really limit your options. There are a few cheap doubles under $500, but I think most people prefer a pump. I think you are gonna have to look for a used gun to get an auto for that price. I'd spend a little more money and buy a good semi automatic. Most companies today make good ones; find one that feels right to you. Good luck!

I have decided that I am going to start duck and turkey hunting, and the first order of business is to buy a gun. I want a gun that can be used for both types of hunting at a reasonable price (around or under $500). I have shot a Remington 870 that one of my friends uses for duck hunting, but after talking to others, I was advised not to get a pump if I was going to use it for duck hunting. I have also been told to get a gun that has a modified or interchangeable choke. I would just like some recommendations from you guys about what type of gun I need to buy. Any other recommendations, advice, or tips will also be very much appreciated. Why did they tell you not to get a pump? Maybe they didn't know how to shoot one. If I had a budget of $2,000, I'd still shoot an 870. Just my preference. No doubt you'll get other opinions. I shoot a 12ga 3.5" with a 26" barrel. I duck and turkey hunt with mine. Pumps are super easy to take apart to clean, because they're gonna get water on them duck hunting. Good luck with whatever you choose and happy hunting.

870....... Most auto loaders aren't dependable enough to hunt waterfowl with Speak for yourself Brent, my beretta loves the cold weather. Knock on wood it has only stuck on me once and that was because it was used as a crutch in some Arkansas mud lol. Wiped out the grit and it kept on barking.

Sorry coonhunter I should have phrased that differently........ I would say that almost no autoloader cheaper than $500 would be dependable enough to hunt waterfowl (or anything else honestly) with. To be honest with you I have a cheaper Beretta (pintail) that I bought for I think $465 back in '95 or '96. I like the gun but I have had problems with it cycling, even with 3" magnums. If I was gonna go with an autoloader on the cheap I would look at the Franchi affinities. I think you can get them in black for a little over $600 N2Turkeys I have 3 different 870's and none of them have ever failed in any way. I've never owned or known anybody that had an auto that batted 1000. They all give problems sooner or later

Beretta 390 from Walmart. Under $600 and tough as nails. Only downside is it weighs a ton.

^^^^^ this...But, I have always bought guns to keep, hunt with and to pass down to my Son. If you are planning on keeping it, find what you like and buy it... If you are going to keep a gun for years, get what you want and you will be happy every time you pick it up and have years of enjoyment out of it and probably watch your child do the same...

Save up a little more money and buy a nice, used Beretta Xtrema II like AU Coonhunter has. They have now been replaced and can be found very reasonable if you keep your eyes open. Best shotgun I've ever owned. I just don't duck hunt and have gone to a 20 gauge for turkey hunting, or else I would still own the 2 that I had.
