Been wanting to try jug fishing. Looking for some simple tips to get started. I will probably use noodles instead of jugs. Recommendations for best bait? Also, how deep to fish? I know cats are bottom feeders but seems like if you set the lines too deep they would hang up easily instead of floating down stream. I will be on the warrior river on both mulberry and locust forks.

We set our at different lengths.Chicken livers on all. If you plan on going at night go by dollar store and get glows sticks to go inside empty tea jugs. We got swim noodles at Walmart for $1.87 each and cut them into 3 sections. We were pond jugging.

Different lengths is a great idea. After a few times I should be able to see which depth works best.

It doesn't hurt to run the stretch of river that your gonna fish wi th a depth finder first. and set them no deeper than the highest humps.

Chicken breast with skin on as good as it gets.Put swivels on your lines with a little weight.Piece of reflective tape around the top of whatever your using. Nightcrawlers and bream will get you yellows and flatheads.

I tried this a few years back with the swimming pool noodles you can get at Walmart. I used braid line thinking it would be better than trot line string. I had several noodles where the braid ripped through the noodle from a big fish. The noodles have a hole that runs the length, I found putting a piece of PVC pipe through the hole prevented the braid from ripping through the noodle.

NOW is the time for all GOOD men to come to the aid of their country.

Also make you something to hook the jugs with. Like a broom handle with a big hook made out of copper tubing. Most of the time just when they are with in arms length they will take off.

Thanks...that is a great idea. Keep them coming. How long do y'all usually leave them out before checking them?

You don't leave them. You stay there and as soon as one takes off you chase it down with the trolling motor. Leaving jugs is unsportsmanlike and irresponsible and what I call littering. If I find jugs with fish on them that people have left I take the fish off and throw it back and cut the hook off and throw it in the water. If you want to catch fish without actually being there and fishing then go buy you a trot line at Walmart so the fish can die on your trot line instead of swimming down the creek with your jug and doing it.

I did not mean I plan on leaving g them out all day. I plan on putting them out and bass fishing in the vicinity. I do not plan on sitting there and staring at jugs all day either. I will neither litter nor leave fish to die. But I know what you mean. I have seen if done the way you are warning against all my life fishing on the river. I have seen countless jugs left floating and many with fish still on.

Depth of the jugs needs to vary. Anywhere from 4 to 12 foot. I like to use beef, cut into 1/2 inch cubes. The beef swells once in the water and bream cant get it off. Also, I've found that you need current to be moving to be successful. They seem to feed better in moving water. I fish the chatahoochee (sp) and check the generation schedule at the dam and fish when they are generating.

We went jugging with noodles last night and had a blast. We had 22 noodles and before we could get them all set out, we had 3 cats on the lines already. We started at 8:30 and finally finished at 12:30. Went back this morning to gather them all up and we ended up with 30 cats, some blue and a few channels. Total weight was over 165lbs. Finished with over 80 lbs of boneless fillets. Cleaning that many aint no fun at all. We just filleted them out and cut out the piece of meat on each side of dorsal fin. Can hardly stay awake today at work. Going to be a fish fry tonight.

We used 50lb test monofilament and tied all the lines to a depth of about 5 feet or less, no weight with 1/0 treble hooks. Used nothing but liver as bait. Tried cut bait last time and only caught cats on liver. We were in a 20 acre pond that is primarily a bass pond. Never realized we had cat like that in there until I caught one bass fishing one afternoon.

Wow, 5-1/2 Lb average in a pond is pretty good !!

Nothing better than cut Skipjack for big blues on the Tennessee River.

I jug in a private pond. We check baits about every 45 minutes.
