Only people with very small penises have to use a large caliber rifle to kill a deer. and bad shots need big guns too.
A 55, 60, 62, or a 75 grain soft point does just fine for deer. Don't shoot one in the shoulder over 150 yards and you'll be just fine. I've killed dozens of em with a .223. Never had ONE get away.

There will be some dumb arse rookie with zero experience compared to you, that don't know crap about deer hunting and will only be hunting in thick woods with all kinds of potential quick shots and shot angles, that will read this, buy a .223 to deer hunt with, and proceed to gimp up a bunch of deer before realizing he should have bought a real deer gun.

Word of warning all barrels dont have a fast enough twist to shoot the heavier bullets. My sons youth nef would only shoot up to a 55 grn bullet anything heavier was all over the place, some would go through target tumbling at only 25yrds.

And people might hear you shoot TSS and think its ok to shoot at turkeys at 60 yards.
Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Here is the million dollar question. Why would you want to shoot one with a .223??? I shoot an a-bolt 243 wssm. Unless the only thing I had was a .223 I wouldn't attempt to deer hunt with it.

I dont recommend tiny calibers, but as long as you're not trying to punch through one at long range, and are using a solid core bullet, the deer will be just as dead as one shot with a 180 grain bullet out of a 300 mag. There are a lot of guys out there that cant hit Jack Shat with a so called "real" gun but can drive tacks with a smaller rifle. Most of them are flinching and dont even realize it. My 7mm rem mag scatters bullets all over the paper, but I can punch the same hole pretty often with my 25.06. The bigger you are, the harder the recoil hits you. A smaller guy takes less force for the recoil to push him back instead of digging deeper into the shoulder, therefore causing more bruising. Several years ago Me and a couple of hunting/fishing buddies were at a chert pit killing the afternoon. After shooting 20 or 30 handloads with my 7mm, I let a buddy load my rifle a few times. The idea was to randomly load a spent cartridge for me. It was a hot summer afternoon and we were in t-shirts. When I dropped the firing pin on the dud, it was obvious why I could start off shooting well and get worse as I went. I didn't realize I had a flinch until that moment.
