I use a trebble hook with the barbs filed off, but I do know a few who have used gas to get them out of the hole or either to make them easier to pull when hooked. A few years back while hunting around Enterprise we had a game warden stop and ask us a few questions and while we were talkin he picked up my waterhose and smelled in the end of it. I reckon he was checkin to see if we had been gassing the holes. But you would be suprised how many say they will use it if they have a big one hooked up.

Slightly off topic but people actually hunt for snakes, outside of the invasive ones in FL? What kind do you guys hunt?

At Opp, Al the first weekend of March they have the rattlesnake rodeo, been having it for probably 50 or more years. Country music entertainment, arts & crafts, food vendors, snake prizes and I guess they still have fried rattlesnake available. It use to be common to take a hose and run it down the hole and listen for the snake and then blow a few drops of gas down there to run it out, they were after eastern diamondback rattlers.

I can tell you this, you don't have to worry about them catching me. One thing I don't do is go looking for snakes. Period!!

I don't know who that was that posted that pic a few weeks back with that snake coiled up at the top of his ladder on that shooting house, but that pic has been stuck in my head every since then. It dang near stopped me from climbing in a couple of lock ons that had the seat folded up in them. Thinking something is going to be coiled up when I push it down. Dang it, I cant stand a snake!!!

If I stumble across a hole with a bunch of snakes in it I'm dropping a dang grenade down it.

Catching rattlesnakes is what I look foward to most about deer season ending. Day after season ends we hit the woods and will hunt until the rodeo weekend is over. When you run the hose down the hole and it sounds like there is a bee in the end of your hose, I get just as excited as if it were a monster buck. Have pulled as many as 7 out of one hole. Alot of turkey hunters have been proud of what we have got out of their favorite spots.

Most of the holes these guys are talking about are gopher tortoise holes. The rattlesnake will share a hole with the gopher or the rattlesnake will take ownership of abandoned gopher holes. The practice of gassing holes became illegal because folks would gas holes for no other reason than because it was a hole and they were killing gopher's.

The gopher tortoise is what I'm concerned with. They don't deserve to have gasoline in their eyes. I don't approve of the gasoline method.

I'd be afraid that a little rattler would climb up that waterhose and bite me on the ear. that would be my luck
