Excellent choice on the contract about phones. Tell him he loses the truck if he gets caught using a phone while driving.

I would also make him pay for the truck. If he doesn't have the means to pay of the entire amount over time, make him pay for half of it, along with a portion of the insurance. He will appreciate it more if he is invested in it, and kids need the learn the costs associated with vehicles (and everything else).

First vehicle should be old and dependable and safe for bad crashes. Youth needs to pay at least half or pay in sweat equity on the restoration. Before they can ever drive alone they must have proven themselves responsible by logging 100 hours driving, can change a flat, do routine maintenance, and can navigate am obstacle course as in a defensive driving class. Contract for usealso.

They need to be invested to promote responsibility. They need to be equipped with skills to handle situations. They need structured accountability early so they can earn more freedom later.

This plan served me well and I'll do the same with mine in a few years.

I made sure my kids had 4 cylinders, nothing fancy, old, and used. They can buy what the hell they want to when they pay for it. So far Rangers and Escorts have done good.

My first truck was an 89 F150 and I still have it. I love that truck. First one I bought myself was a 2010 F150.

My 17 year old works a minimum wage job and as much over time as she can handle with all honors course load at high school to afford the 4 cylinder I got a loan for. She pays for both her insurance and her monthly payment. Costs 26 dollars to fill up. Easy to maintain and dependable. I don't know what it costs to fill up the Tahoe or Yukon but I'm betting my daughter couldn't afford that. We went with affordable with air bags and ABS.

IMO I don't know if having a 16 year old behind the wheel of a jacked up SUV is exactly what I constitute as "safe"...safe for who? him or her as the driver? What about the 30+ year driver that does drive a honda civic that gets t-boned by a texting/cell phone using teen in an Escalade?

As an FYI: I have just posted a 2001 Chevy Silverado 2WD Extended Cab truck for sale in classified forum. Great first truck for a new driver. Or great work truck to replace an older one that has issues.

2000 Jeep grand cherokee for my oldest son,my thinking was sits high enough, air bags, inline six ( not enough get up and go to get out of it's own way ),and enough room to put all of his baseball equipment.

2000 Ford ranger extended cab 4x4 for youngest son,(he's my
outdoor guy) sits up high, but not too high, air bags,4 banger.
He can put his golf clubs in the extended cab and pier cart in the bed. I felt that these 2 vehicles were safe and functional
as weel as economical.

Wouldn't buy them any vehicle. Let them work a job and save money and buy their own first vehicle. Builds character. Just agree to pay for the insurance coverage.
