I looked at it awhile back. Nice setup and business. I came so close to guiding when I was laid off 4 years ago, but I decided not to last minute. This job folds, I am going for it.

I can only imagine. If it would get me off 12 hour swing shift I would just about give it a whirl though.

I envy anyone who is a guide. Especially lake Guntersville. I love to bass fish, and couldn't think of any job out there I would rather do. My father in law is a guide and he has told me about the ups and downs. One time a woman hooked the back of his seat sayin I'm hung up, jerkin ever time she said it. Tore a big ole hole in his nice ranger haha. But still it pays good money he brings in 1500 on good weeks

I wouldn't be a guide if you put a gun to my head.

Paying customers can be great.

They also can be mouth-breathing assholes who expect the guide to make fish bite and get pissed when they don't. Fish don't always bite, even for the best guides and pro anglers. Yet the paying customer believes the guide is a magician who can automatically make it happen.

The guide has to be nice, friendly and chipper no matter what. Even if he's done everything right, mouth-breather will wander off to tell his buddies that Bigtime Pro Guide couldn't catch a fish and he wouldn't fish with him again ... yet he doesn't talk about how they stopped at X-number of places, tried 29 different lures and tactics and did everything possible. All he says is "the guide sucked."

If you can put up with those days, and those should be far fewer than the good ones if you're a good guide, more power to you.

I've always thought guides on Guntersville ask for less money than they can get, too. It's not like it's a gar hole. It's one of the premier lakes in the country. It's playing baseball at Yankee Stadium or Turner Field, not a Double-A stadium.

Poachers, what's the funniest guide story your FIL has ever told you?

I know a guide who said one of his clients crapped in the lining of his "fur"-trimmed hooded jumpsuit, didn't know it and got back in the boat after a "gotta go" pit stop in the woods. Guy's wife went nuts since they'd just bought the jumpsuit at the Walmarks that day. LOL

$1500 isn't much when it cost $100 or more to fill up. Add oil, gear and maintenance and he gets to fish for a nice discount. It would be a lot of fun though.

Yeah he gets paid good money to do what he loves. Stories huh? man there never ending. I would put up with all the crap to do it, it's not much different than the usual crap you put up with anywhere else. A job is a job. But anyway one that comes to mind is this..

Short version.(I'm at work)
Had a Japanese couple right after a-rig got popular. They didn't speak English so had to have translator. As you can imagine lots of jibber jabber. They wanted to throw a-rig and wouldn't shut up about it. So he run over to south sauty bridge. Hook up on a striped bass. They flipping out never seen one before. They caught a few havin a good time. Jabberin away he couldn't understand a word of it. Then a eagle flew over. They was actin like Jesus was descending from heaven. Started goin crazy with foreign talk. Needless to say they spent the rest of the day runnin up and down the river chasing it so they could take pictures

Sorry it took so long to reply man

Don't forget that half of the mouth breathers own a boat and think that because they paid you to take them fishing one time they are entitled to every fishing spot you took them to from now on.

Before BASS changed the rules, this is how Kevin VanDam won so many events.
