I shot an eight point at 515 and a doe at 550 but didn't find her till the next day and the coyotes got her. I don't shoot that far anymore after I lost that deer that and I don't practice enough these days. Tc pro hunter fluted bull barrel 7mm mag 139 grain hornady interlock Nikon scope BDC recticle. I had the bullet drop chart laminated and taped to my stock and a good range finder
We will burn that bridge when we get there

I emptied a 742 at a buck running across a cutover with a pack of dogs behind him back in the 70s. He was nearly across the 40, so he must have been around 400 yds. Never cut a feather. Does that count? I can remember killing several in the 300 yd range, but never tried to go back and measure the distance. I don't have many places that I can see over 200 yds where I hunt.

I shot a good buck running wide open one time at 617 yards. It was pure blind luck and really I was stupid for even shooting at him to begin with.
We were looking for a buck a guy had shot the evening before and this buck stood up in the cutover. Several guys saw the deer stand up and two of them hit their knees and started shooting. After popping off a few rounds they only managed to put the deer in warp drive running across the cutover. One guy yelled at me and said "SHOOT HIM". I raised my rifle shooting off handed and led the deer by ten feet. I pulled the trigger and he piled up. The guys started screaming and hollering and then one broke out a rangfinder. After the heat of the moment wore off, I instantly regretted that shot. It was much more likely that I could have just boogered that deer up than kill it, and I have never shot at one that far since.
I have killed several between 300 - 350 on purpose.

I don't ever recall shooting at a deer over 200 yards. I killed a fox in Iowa on my uncles farm at 500+ yards with his sniper rifle when I was 13. He set the dope, then told me to shoot. Bang, miss. Bang, flop. He was an Army marksman and shot competitions after the service.

Shooting a deer standing still is no comparison to shooting one running across a clearcut at 200-300. Ill just add that as a sidebar. My son couldn't imagine shooting a deer that wasn't standing perfectly still. When I was growing up, I rarely shot one that WAS standing still. Lol Sounds like a group shoot would be interesting (with a house rifle of course).
