I sat from 5:30 till 10 this morning and didn't see anything. I didn't even hear any shots, and that's unusual for the start of doe days at the NF.

Well, my phone was not cooperating this morning. Got in the stand about 6:10am. As soon as my butt hit the seat all heck was breaking loose in a SMZ to my left about 100yds. Running, crashing, grunting, grunting and more grunting. After a few trips around the hillside they headed out. The only problem was with all of the cloud cover this morning I could not see them at all.

Pretty quiet from then on till about 8:40am. The sun popped thru for about 5 mins and not long after that I catch movement thru the cutover in front of me. It is a young 6pt cruising thru the saddle. I watched as he eased out of sight. 20 mins later another burst of sun came and as I was scanning the cutover I see beams and a large bodied deer standing in the cutover. I watched him as he walked about 60 yds and bedded down again looking north with a south wind hitting him from behind. With him looking dead away from him I could tell his beams were out past his ears, with long sweeping beams and pretty good 2's. He only had 6pts but he was wide, had decent mass and they were sitting on a mature body. I watched him thru the scope and binos for 20 minutes before he stood and gave me a good shot to take. I could tell that he was getting ready to stand up so I clicked the safety off and waited for the shot. After another minute or so he stood up and I fired. After traveling 172yds the 7Mag found it's mark and the buck piled up and never moved.

I have had hunted this club for 6 yrs and this is the first buck I have taken off it. I have let plenty go over the years, but I had my 13yr old stepson with me and thought it would be a cool teachable moment for him. He jumped right in and help drag him 100yds thru the cutover. I am not sure he liked that very much.

ROLL TIDE !!!

Enough Said....

Well, prime movement was at 5:40. Saw 2 does and a buck on the drive home. Nothing in the field

Here's my Dad's buck. His G2 and 3 on the left are broken (almost a 9 pt.) Dad was pretty upset that the buck was so young, but I can't help but be excited for him. Dad puts A TON of time and effort into the farm, so it's nice for him to get to kill a buck every once in a while.

Glad he got him one. Tell him i said congrats!
