I have done a fair amount of scouting at Oakmulgee in the past few years. Last year I saw few hunters at Oakmulgee during the bow days but plenty during the gun days, so is anyone hunting here and do you have any tips? I have gone to just finding me a good trail and sitting on it with the wind in my favor, tried finding bedding areas and such but ti seems to me the deer are very nomadic. The tornadoes of 2011 did a number on the management area and several large sections of timber were mowed down. I suspect these will make for some good areas once they thicken up a bit more.

Hey Abram, long time no see. I am the guy that had the archery shoots in Samantha, Alabama about 10 years ago. Anyway, I plan on trying the Oak this year. I used to hunt outside the redline in the Nat. Forest on the Hwy. 82 side. I found that the deer bedded more along the drainage ditches that were thick with bushes or river cane. All the bucks in the redline seemed to move well at nigt. Like I say I will hunt the Oak this season so if you go and would like some company just send me a P.M. and I'll give you my cell number. I know it has a good number of hogs and some fine deer. I don't want to tag along it's just nice to know that there is someone close by in case you need some help. Such, as pulling something big out of the woods.

Hey Booger,

I hunt both in Mayfield Creek and South of Hwy 25. I have never hunted outside the red line but some of my friends do. I will hopefully be in there this Saturday and every weekend that isn't gun weekend, makes me nervous to be in there during those times although last year I went during a gun day and did not hear but two shots all day, that was strange. There are so many places that look promising that it makes it hard to plan a scouting trip let alone a hunt. How far are you from the WMA?

I'm about 30 minutes from Shiloh church. How far is the entrance from the Interstate if I take Hwy. 5? What is the terrain like down around Mayfield? Are the hollows real deep? Swampy?

Booger,

Sorry to get back to you so late. Coming down Hwy 5 from the interstate you are about 12-16 miles from the entrance to the WMA.

We went Saturday and the sign was not promising, went to one of my favorite areas for the opener and there was only a handful of acorns on the ground. Where we did find droppings and such there was plenty of hog sign and those little bastages are like shop vacs when it comes to eating acorns.

I live really close to the WMA, not too far from the Duncanville Post Office and will be hunting it some this year. I've already been out twice. Had a doe 8 yards from me but let her go cause she looked like she was still letting her youngun feed.

If you ever want to meet up or want/need help while out there, just let me know. Send me e-mail if you'd like my cell number. Never know when you need an extra set of eyes to track or a gallon of gas to get out!

My neighbor let's me hunt an 80 acre plot behind the house that I've taken nice deer 2 years in a row, so on the really "good" days, I hunt back there. But I LOVE hunting public land, so I just can't stay away from that area.

I also have hunted north of the redline and have taken a couple nice (for me) bucks in 2008 and 2010.

Hey Abram, I have been swamped the last few days as well. I noticed on my club that the acorns were slow to fall but now they are falling more.

Thanks Jason, I may have to take you up on that offer.

Booger, I am headed down there this weekend and hopefully and I think I am going to move a little closer to what I think is the bedding area in one area, I have stepped on deer there just about every time I have scouted.

I have put quite a few miles on some booth leather down there. My goal has always been to take a deer off of public land while sitting on the ground. In 2010 I came so close twice but could never close the deal, hopefully this will be the year.

Jason or Booger, when you guys say you are hunting north of the red line do you mean the WMA boundary?

I've always wanted to go hunt it but I'm skeptical about hunting any public land. I've seen some good deer killed there though

Howdy... New to the site. I've lived near Oakmulgee for years but never hunted it. I'd love to tag along with someone on gun days.

I'm a 30 year old responsible guy... so no worries about a drunk hillbilly getting trigger happy.

Just be sure to wear plenty of orange and then some more. There seems to be more and more trigger happy hillbillies every year.

Sorry for the delay Abram, been busy hunting up in Michigan, then Thanksgiving holiday, etc.

Red Line = WMA boundary

So yes. I've hunted in the area around Lake Payne Rd and NF Rd 751 (33.003091, -87.387331)

Well, I have yet to step foot into Oakmulgee. Way too busy. But I am hoping that will change in about 2 weeks. Anyone done any good? Acorns or no acorns? I still plan on going so don't give up on me yet. I am going to try google earth out to see if I can find any likely starting points. For archery hunts do you have to sign in or do you just check in if you kill? Do you have to check in your hogs?
