The attached picture should give this visually as well. In math we learned that a-squared + b-squared = c-squared. This will give us the unknown distance in the picture, which is c. (20*20)+(60*60)=c-square 4000=c-squared To find c, we take the square root of both sides of the equation, giving us 63.25 rounded up. So on a 60 ft distance, the shot would be 63.25 ft. 20 yd shot = 21.08 yds 90 ft shot = 92.20 ft 30 yd shot = 30.73 yds 150 ft shot = 151.33 ft 50 yd shot = 50.44 yds So it makes the most difference on the shorter shots, but not enough to miss, IMHO.

Ok your Math formula is correct however your off a little on the purpose of the arc technology. If you had a ranfe finder in regular mode it would give you the actual distance, in this case C. That is the distance from you to the deer, regaurdless of how high you are in the tree. Here is the problem; The rate at wich your arrow drops is only affected by gravity. So the distance you want for the shot is the distance from the base of the tree to the deer and that is what the arc gives you. So the distance from you to the deer may be 35 yards but the disance from the base of the tree may be 30 yards. So you would use your 30 yard pin. I could be wrong on all this but this is the way it was explained to me.

Why not just buy a pendulum and let it do the figuring ?

so you would solve any of these with the same forumla, just trying to find a different side of the triangle.
i was just explaining the process to figure the distance.
my point to this is that for most bowhunters, it will not make a difference due to the slight change in distance.
Only for longer shots up extreme angles really would it really payoff.

Watched a guy on the ODC shoot a big horn ram in Arizona at 110 yards. But, he shot him using his 60 yd pin. The shot was almost straight up. The more the angle the bigger the difference.

The horizontal arrow speed also decreases as the downward shot angle increases. How does that factor into this? You want to solve for the ground/horizontal distance. So assuming you are 15 ft up in a tree, and you are 20 ft line of sight, then you would shoot like 13.2 ft or 4.4 yds, which is also your horizontal distance. Now let's say you like to climb high. 30 ft up, 40 ft line of sight, shoot like 26.46ft or 8.81 yds, also the horizontal distance. Uphill or downhill the formula works. It would just flip the picture.
