Rented a trailer to carry my tractor to the club to work some fields. Load was around 9,500 lbs for tractor and trailer. Came to a LONG STEEP WINDING section of road. As I started down the hill, I realized that the trailer had no brakes cry. Fought that thing all the way down the hill with the GMC giving it all she had to keep us at a slow enough pace to handle the curves (no easy task). By the time we got to the bottom her brakes were smok'in.

When it got a little darker my headlights turned on and guess what - the trailer brakes activated. Guess they have the trailer wired incorrectly. Told my wife she was almost rich but thanks to the 2500 HD GMC she still has to put up with me.

Will never rent a trailer again. Going to get a 14,000 lb rated trailer either gooseneck of bumper pull (never pulled a gooseneck).

Get the gooseneck it will pull a heck of lot better than the bumper pull.

That's what I was thinking but I've heard
* gooseneck are more difficult to pull since they are prone to cut corners.
* Highway driving goosenecks are much better.
* gooseneck more of a pain to hitch.

No you can turn much shorter, pulls better because of the weight being distributed over you rear axel.
Yes
No, easier you van actually see the hitch and ball at hookups.

I didn't hear this, I know from using both:
Get a gooseneck
Get a gooseneck
Get a gooseneck

It's worth the extra hassle to hook one up. The only reason they are harder to hook up is because you don't have a bumper to bump with the trailer hitch.

Just remember, when you unhook, leave the tailgate open. I've ruined 2 tailgates by unhooking and taking off. The gooseneck wins every time.

Both of ours are deck overs. One is a lightweight trailer like you're looking for and the other is a heavy bastid. If you're going to be hauling a tractor with implement, get at least a 24'. 20 foot with 4 foot dove tail. You can fit a mid sized tractor with loader with bush hog on the rear on one that size.

Oh, and don't EVER load a tractor while the truck and trailer are parked on a gravel road pointed downhill. Once that tractor mounts the trailer, you can't stop the rig from sliding regardless of how hard you push on the tractor brakes. Been there, done that, got T-shirt and stained underwear to prove it.

That's funny Fur, I did the same thing and it scared the sheet out of me. I was unloading and my truck took off down the hill. It took a second but I just hammered it in reverse and got off the trailer and it stopped. Buy one with ramps that have stands under them to keep the trailer from picking up the truck or put a block under the rear of the trailer at all times while loading.

I say fifth wheel. Just because it makes hooking up even easier than gooseneck ha. And there is nothing like pulling a non bumper pull trailer

Gooseneck for no other reason than most friends and family do not have the hitch to borrow it so it will always be home when you need it.

I dam sho wasn't at the time! There was an 8 foot deep ditch at the bottom of the driveway. I probably slid 30 feet. Never had the sense to back off the trailer....

I saw a guy do that with a backhoe and low boy a few years back. when the truck stopped the hoe was half off the trailer. scary crap. TN river was at the bluff below.

Same here, well my dad did a few years back anyway, not me. I had to dodge the runaway rig. Ruined a trailer hitch, two tires on the flat bed and got lucky it didn't total the truck when it slid into a group of trees. At the last second the truck jack-knifed and the truck bed and trailer hit the trees instead of the body of the truck. We got lucky it only warped the trailer and blew the two tires.

If you don't go with a bed over, make dang sure your tractor will fit between the fenders. Ours just barely does and we are thinking of trading to a bed over but that is going to put our overall all height up there.
