Does anyone have any useful info for hunting Skyline. Went out yesterday for first time. Saw some sign, but also a fair amount of hunters. Should I stay clear of the fields on this WMA? Found a few transition areas from field to field, but looking to gain as much knowledge as possible.

Be willing to walk further in where the lazy guys won't go. Lots of hills in there, and it would be easy to get lost after dark - plan ahead for that.

When you think you have walked in far enough to get away from everyone, walk another 1/2 mile. I have hunted there for years and it is a beast to hunt. Find the white oaks right now, the deer are wearing them out on the sides of the mountains. First and second shelves off the top seem to be the best right now.

There are a lot of clearcut areas that were logged several years ago that are grown up into thickets now. The deer hide out in these clearcuts to avoid hunting pressure. My advice would be walk the edges of these until you find where the deer are going in/out of the thickets and look for whiteoaks around this area. The deer are hammering the whiteoaks up here right now.

You don't always have to walk five miles from the road to find deer up here. There's a lot of places holding deer that get overlooked. Stay away from the fields and look for the thickest junk you can find. Good luck.

The problem with killing a deer in that kind of area is getting it out. I know that's where they can be found, but I've never wanted to kill one that bad. I want mine to die real close to the truck laugh

No luck today @ skyline, but I was able to employ some of the advice given. Great day afield regardless and I cant wait to go back and maybe hit up an area more north than the 146/33 area, seems kinda crowded. Once again any advice is welcome

Are you gun hunting?

This is one of the gun hunt weekends. I figured the place would be crawling ... one reason I'm staying away right now. Every deer in there probably is losing its mind right now.

Yeah I figured I would give it a try with gun. It was crowded, but I thought by staying seating during lunch I might get a push from the other guys but no luck. I will try again later, hopefully with a kill.
