I suppose it could likely be mud but wouldn't the white areas be colored as well ? The spots on her head look like bumps and the skin on her neck appears to be wrinkled.

It looks like the photo was "doctored" up if you look very close. The other side of the deer is natural, but where the front side is, you can see the areas in question. If you were sent this picture, I would think someone is pulling your leg on this one. If it came from your own camera, I think she may have a bad problem with parasites.

If it's mud, you should be able to tell after the next rain or so. You should be able to ID her by the 2 yearlings with her. Also, where was the picture taken? I'm guessing those fawns are this years, or the button head would be a spike?

It looks like the photo was "doctored" up if you look very close. Possible, but I have seen other mammal species look like that. It was always either a skin disease or a genetic abnormality. Notice how much that doe looks like the hairless variety of cat?

BSK, if it is hair loss it could be related to an endocrine disorder. But still looks like she laid down in the mud to me.
