unless your planting for erosion control. Probably 50 to 100 pounds per acre...

If you are planting in a pasture, we go with 60 lbs per acre here at the house. I do not plant rye grass on my food plots though. Go back through the archives here and you will see several long discussions about rye grass on food plots and its nutritional values.

I can't stand a thief.

I know most hunters don't like planting ryegrass as a foodplot, but growing up we had a couple fields we would drill marshall ryegrass in for winter grazing cattle, and if those fields were planted we always had deer in them.

Why Marshall ryegrass? Why not just any Annual Ryegrass? The nutritional value is as good and the seed are a little cheaper.
The only difference is that Marshall lasts about two weeks longer in spring. Just when you don't need it.

When sod-seeding/drilling I use one bag/50 lbs. per acre & when broadcasting use 1 1/2 bags per acre.

Mix a little clover with the ryegrass, and fertilize well.

Good as anything else..........

It's an old myth that ryegrass doesn't make good deer plots and is still perpetuated by the ignorant.

the biggest problem with ryegrass is the fact that is so dominant. If you ever decide that you don't want it, good luck with getting rid of it!

I guess I'm one of the "ignorant".

Like ronfromramer said, it's not that deer don't like it, it's just that there is other stuff that I think deer prefer a lot more, and once you plant rye it takes over and is very hard to get rid of. Try planting clover in what was previously a rye grass field and see how the clover does in competition.

I wish I could get ryegrass to come back every year. Sure would save me a lot of seed expense. Course I let the cows graze it hard just before it goes to seed and there aren't many seedheads left. Either that, or cut it for hay. You do know that it's an "Annual" and doesn't come back from the roots year to year? Seed only. My clover & ryegrass seems to compatable.

you know a lot more about it than I do, but all I know is it used to be in a fall mix we planted and since then we've tried to plant some perennial clover fields and can't get the rye grass to give it up...

I planted rye grain in a couple test plots last year and the deer hammered the rye. I will be planting more this year!

The problem is people don't know the difference in their Rye, whether it be ryegrass (annual or perennial) or cereal grail.

You end up with ryegrass in your seed bank and want perennial clover plots and hello Clethodim 2-3x a year.

Rye does indeed grow better in Jan. (the coldest month) than most of the other winter annuals. Just when they need it.

The best growing clover in the coldest winter months (that I have found) is "AU Robin", a crimson clover.

One of the most important factors in choosing food plot seed (for me) is how it grows in the coldest months because the youngest tender forage is what deer usually go for.

I have screwed up in the past and planted food plots too early, the plants grew too much before the cold months started and they hardly ate that forage.

Sometimes even late October............... I can't remember which year it was but 10 years or so ago I didn't plant until Thanksgiving and they wore the food plots out, stayed in them night and day.
