check out duckhill kennels in Somerville, Tn. Top notch British labs and the often have fox red pups. There is a difference in the "American" Labs and labs that come for stock across the pond. Temperment tends to be alot calmer and they are usually easy to train. They also dont get as big. My Pup from them is 8 months old and is doing great in training. I will be dove and duck hunting with him this year on a limited basis. http://www.duckhillkennels.com/

I know several in the 100 lb plus range. They are usually the ones with the bucket head people like. As far as training goes I'll take an American lab any day. I have trained several and they are super smart. The American lab usually have a lot more drive than the Brits.Brits labs are beautiful and very nice dogs but if performance is what you want better stick here at home. http://www.duckhillkennels.com/

Laidback you are the first person I have ever heard say that the British labs are bigger than American labs...I researched like crazy prior to getting our dog and all the info I found disagrees with you. I'm sure you know some people with 100 lb. labs, but are you sure they are true British labs? My dog just turned 1 yo and she is 42 lbs.

I have a friend of mine who has one that goes aroung 120. He is a full British lab. Kenneth Farris at Southwind Kennels has Brody which is full British and a whopper. He is also one of the best looking labs I have seen.

I was talking specifically about dogs from this kennel. Almost all of their dogs have Uk field champion blood. Their male dogs get about 65-70 pounds max, some are smaller. I promise that there dogs can do anything that you need in the field. If you want an AKC field trail dog you might want to look somewhere else. My 8 month old pup has tons of drive but also has good manners and it was not a struggle by any means to train obedience. Some high power field trail type dogs have a hard time sitting still and quiet between birds on a dove shoot or duck hunt in my experience. Not all but some. You are correct my friend in that the most of the high power dogs have trouble sitting at the line. That can usually be fixed. I have a 15 month old female that is doing derby work that will sit and watch. She has been with a pro for the summer in Michigan since it is so hot here and runs 250 to 450 yard marks everyday. When I sent her to him at 12 months she was doing nice finished work. I never had any trouble training her so there are a lot of high power dogs that are very easy to train.

We have a lab puppy lined up for my son for christmas. He's been wanting one to show(AKC), do obedience with, and for a hunting buddy. The pup is from English lines which tend to be stockier and squarer built. They are bred to a strict conformation standard that emphasizes looks. They also tend to be much calmer. "Size--The height at the withers for a dog is 22½ to 24½ inches; for a bitch is 21½ to 23½ inches. Any variance greater than ½ inch above or below these heights is a disqualification. Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds." So a hundred pounds is a bit excessive, and also hard on the dogs body and joints. A dog that big would find it hard to keep up in the field, and will probably end up with hip displaysia and joint issues. Labs are also easily overweight. You should be able to feel the rib seperations(not see), when you run your hand down their side.
American field lines are bred on performance. This usually produces a lighter bodied, longer legged, more athletic dog with extremely high energy and no set size and wieght limits or looks. This is a dog more suited for the hardcore person who is going to be giving the dog a "job" to do everyday. A bored high energy dog is a problem dog that takes is bored frustration out by barking chewing, agressive behavior, digging, escaping, etc.
No matter which type you decide is right for you, be sure to find a breeder who does health testing. At least hips and eyes. It'll save a lot of issues and vet bills in the future. Plus a good breeder will be a good resource to helping you train your new pup and tackle any problems that may arise.
