Two years ago I was in the same dilemma you are in. I went to a local pawn shop and found a few bows. Came back on here and asked for advice. I bought a PSE Nova, arrows, and broadheads based on this sites recommendations. Good starter bow to learn with and see if i really like bow hunting. In the items for sale on this site, their is one just like mine with everything you need for about $ 150.00 maybe less to get started. Just my opinion but to me it was and is well worth it to get started.

Regardless of the equipment you decide to go with, PLEASE go to a reputable bow shop and/or a seasoned archer and learn proper form and technique before you begin practicing on your own. If you start shooting with good habits then you will be well ahead of the game.

If you are wanting to bowhunt, most any major brand name is okay. It doesn't take much bow to kill a deer, although the manufacturers try real hard in advertisements to make you think you need the latest and greatest every year. The key is getting one with the right draw length, right poundage, and one you are confident in. Find someone knowledgeable that can determine the 1st two criteria. It'll save you in the long run.

Raven has a Ross Cardiac in the classifieds. It's an excellent price for a very good starter bow ... and Raven happens to be an expert who probably sets up 50 or more bows a week. So if you need an adjustment, I spect he can handle that before you drive home with it.

Like others said, any decent bow will do fine. The key is getting the right draw length and not trying to shoot to much poundage, then getting it tuned right.
Buying one from a pawn shop or individual and tuning it yourself will lead to frustration.
Buying one from a dealer or having a knowledable person help you set it up will lead to you being surprised at how well you can shoot in a short amount of time.
Good luck.....Go the dealer route for your first bow.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

So get you a good bow and a good target to start with and have at it.

some good advice here... BE WARNED - bowhunting is very addictive... drugs and gambling may be better choices in the long run my only advice is that it's more important where the arrow comes out than where it goes in...
"Getting up every day and going through this again and again is hard."

The advice above is all good. A good pro shop will save you tons of time, money, and headaches. Once you get everything setup and ready, practice, practice, and practice some more. Attending a few 3D shoots is great as well, you get to meet other bowhunters, practice judging distance, picking a spot, and watch and learn. And it is fun.
I don't shoot 3D to win. I shoot it because I love it and the folks. It is also great practice for hunting season.
I have been on western hunts with guys that can sit in the back yard and slam their targets to death, yet when the real thing walks up, they miss. I think 3D helps with that. You have to learn to shoot in front of others, concentrate, and judge distance. That deer is not always going to walk up and stop right on 20 yards! LOL
