I want to get a bow to learn on but I dont want to get a crappy bow. What's a good midgrade bow that's not terrible complex to figure out? One that I can use from the beginning stages up intil I get pretty good and need to get the bow I'll keep forever? (or until technology forces me to get another one

Two years ago I was in the same dilemma you are in. I went to a local pawn shop and found a few bows. Came back on here and asked for advice. I bought a PSE Nova, arrows, and broadheads based on this sites recommendations. Good starter bow to learn with and see if i really like bow hunting.
In the items for sale on this site, their is one just like mine with everything you need for about $ 150.00 maybe less to get started. Just my opinion but to me it was and is well worth it to get started.

I have a PSE Nova with all the stuff you need to get started for sale in the classifieds section. I'm asking $100, which is about $50 bucks for the bow and $50 bucks for all the stuff. Check out the ad if your interested:

Regardless of the equipment you decide to go with, PLEASE go to a reputable bow shop and/or a seasoned archer and learn proper form and technique before you begin practicing on your own. If you start shooting with good habits then you will be well ahead of the game.

If you are wanting to bowhunt, most any major brand name is okay. It doesn't take much bow to kill a deer, although the manufacturers try real hard in advertisements to make you think you need the latest and greatest every year. The key is getting one with the right draw length, right poundage, and one you are confident in. Find someone knowledgeable that can determine the 1st two criteria. It'll save you in the long run.

Raven has a Ross Cardiac in the classifieds. It's an excellent price for a very good starter bow ... and Raven happens to be an expert who probably sets up 50 or more bows a week. So if you need an adjustment, I spect he can handle that before you drive home with it.

Great advice. I myself am not a bowhunter, but that's the way I would do it.

Like others said, any decent bow will do fine. The key is getting the right draw length and not trying to shoot to much poundage, then getting it tuned right.

Buying one from a pawn shop or individual and tuning it yourself will lead to frustration.

Buying one from a dealer or having a knowledable person help you set it up will lead to you being surprised at how well you can shoot in a short amount of time.

Good luck.....Go the dealer route for your first bow.

Thats good advice. Shooting a bow is not rocket science and you will be proficient sooner than you think. So get you a good bow and a good target to start with and have at it.

After you get a bow, talk to some bow hunters for advice on shot placement and deer hunting with a bow. You have to be very selective and choose your shots, no walking or quartering towards you, ect. Gun shot deer usually die instantly, bow shot deer you have to give them some time before you pick up their trail.

Your gonna fall in love with bowhunting just as I did 6 years ago. I started out with a Ben Pearson bow, it was a low grade bow, and I would have to say for me that helped alot due to the fact that everything I had to learn about bowhunting was gonna be through trial and error. One year after I purchased my 1st bow my 36 year old cousin purchased his first and only bow to date. We both learned alot through each other, and reading alot of bowhunting books and magazines, and wathing alto of outdoor channel. Sice then I have owned A Mathews MQ32, and now own a Mathews DXT, and wouldnt trade the world for it. If you have bowhunting friends or family, bye a top of the line bow, and you will learn fast with a few tips... twocents

some good advice here...
BE WARNED - bowhunting is very addictive... drugs and gambling may be better choices in the long run smile

my only advice is that it's more important where the arrow comes out than where it goes in...

I bought my bow from a neighbor for $60. All I know about it is it is a PSE and the deer I shot with it died.

And that about sums it up right there.

Many of my friends like to poke at me for using that noisy pendulum site. But none of the deer, in my freezer, seemed to mind the noise too much. wink

The advice above is all good. A good pro shop will save you tons of time, money, and headaches. Once you get everything setup and ready, practice, practice, and practice some more. Attending a few 3D shoots is great as well, you get to meet other bowhunters, practice judging distance, picking a spot, and watch and learn. And it is fun.

I don't shoot 3D to win. I shoot it because I love it and the folks. It is also great practice for hunting season.

I have been on western hunts with guys that can sit in the back yard and slam their targets to death, yet when the real thing walks up, they miss. I think 3D helps with that. You have to learn to shoot in front of others, concentrate, and judge distance. That deer is not always going to walk up and stop right on 20 yards! LOL
