What are the laws regulating guns in "gun free school zones"? I can't exit my neighborhood without going through one. Am I in violation simply driving through one with a firearm? ...also am I supposed to avoid all school zones when going hunting/shooting etc? OR are "gun free school zones" fairly meaningles unless you commit another crime? I don't remember exactly how he termed it but a cc instructor in TN...told me they are pretty meaningless unles you intend to (or do) use the firearm to facilitate a crime. What say the legal gurus?

How about on School property(parking lot) am I in violation if I have my CC gun on me when I drop off my kids for school? ...what about inside the school? Is there any difference? I know these signs are meaningless, all they can do is refuse service and ask you to leave. If you refuse they can have you arrested for Trespassing, but no gun charges. Federal/government buildings are another story.

rebelpiper, even if it is legal you might face discipline from your employer if they have a policy against it. Same for students at all levels of school.

Lots of employers have a "no weapons on the property" rule.

Yes, and its their right to do so.
I am more interested in what laws regulate cc carry on school property(dropping off your kid in the parking lot) and just out of curiosity IN schools.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Alabama's state law on bringing guns on school campuses may be more lenient than you think. That's because there is no law on the books that specifically addresses concealed guns on school property.
But that doesn't mean anyone with a permit is allowed on campus with a weapon. According to state law, if you have a license to carry a gun, you can carry it at an Alabama school.
A federal law makes it illegal if there is an intent to do bodily harm. But each school district can enact a no-guns-on-campus policy. That's how it is in Jefferson County.
If someone with a valid license to carry a concealed weapon comes to a football game on campus, school officials can ask that person to leave or come back without the weapon. If that person refuses to leave, they will be charged with trespassing.
"A county, for example, could enact a law that said 'in the schools in this county, you cannot carry a firearm within 100 feet of the school' or something like that," Judge John Carrol says.
The Alabama State Department of Education does prevent teachers from carrying a concealed weapon on campus.
Former deputy and police investigator Mac McCutcheon, who is now a state representative, is putting together a bill that would address this issue. The bill would make it illegal to carry a concealed weapon on campus in Alabama schools, but it would allow someone with a permit to leave the gun in a locked car in a school parking lot

I can be fired for having a weapon on the school property, even with the intent of going hunting after school. I used to keep the rifle behind the backseat of the truck and head for the woods as soon as the bell rang. Superintendant came one day and went over some policy changes with us. Told us we were in trouble if a gun was with us. I still take mine to school, but I park in the drive way of a Deputy Sheriff that is my friend. He lives across the parking lot from the school! This requires me to walk about 40 yards to get into the building instead of the 10 yards when the gun is not with me. I guess you could say I am breaking the law because the gun is in the school zone. It would be hard for the law to enforce this law, unless there were other issues at hand. I have a clean record and all the LEO's in the area know me and get along fine with me. I guess this law is dependent on who you are and your intent with the gun.

bump...in light of the recent tragedy. Ignore Gun free zones!
Unless you are employed by a company restricting guns, then its up to you to decide if it is worth the risk.
There are no laws on the books giving these "Gun free zones" any legal weight.

As a student you could be disciplined by the school(possibly even expelled) but there is nothing illegal about it. And if it is properly concealed they should never know.
