Anybody planting them this year. I planted some years ago and the turkeys killed them. Thinking about doing a patch this year.

They are the best thing you can plant to keep and hold turkeys without a doubt. You just have to keep the coons and hogs out of them because they both will destroy a chufa patch.

Doubt it would grow to well up here in the rocks and chert dirt of north Alabama and tn. I have only ever seen one field and it was in florida about 10 years ago on public land.

I only wish that were true. I'd be more than happy to set up on a chufa patch this morning and shoot him when he walks out there. wink

Instead, I'm headed to the Coosa WMA to hunt a turkey that is crazy.

I plant about 5 acres each year. Most of the past few years have been total failures due to lack of rain. But I'll try again; I love to watch them grow, and they will keep a bunch of turkeys on the place all winter if they make.

Years ago when I planted them the coons got there share. That was in a creek bottom. This field is on higher ground and still good dirt. I'm thinking around mid-June.

How many pounds per acres does it take? Cost per pound? I have thought about it, but not sure if it is worth the time and money. I only have a few birds travel through every now and then, would it be worth it?

What time of year do you plant them?

I was reading up on them last night. Looks like they recommend 40 pounds per acre. Says they need 90-100 days of frost free weather, so I was thinking maybe plant the first of July. My Grandad and Dad always said the weeds wouldn't be as bad after July. That being said, you can treat the soil with Treflan to control the weeds, so I might actually do that and plant in Mid June. Says to fertilize with 300 pounds per acre of 13-13-13, then after they get established, hit them with some Ammonia Nitrate. I sprayed the field today with roundup (it had clover in it). I'm going to go ahead and do two plots this year. The Montgomery politician that is next door to me has them fed off me now. I made a vow that won't happen next year. I'm not going to stoop to feeding, but I'm going to have the food sources there for them. I've already had some road hunters slip by there and I ran them off the other day. Met with the GW out there and gave him a key to the lock, so hopefully they will keep a watch on it. He was talking about setting up the stuffed gobbler and trying to catch this fool.

I plant in late June or early July. The biggest problem I have is weeds since it isn't Roundup ready. I get my land ready and let all the weeds come up and hit it with Roundup. As soon as it starts to turn good I plant. I think you could probably spray them with a light mix of roundup since it's hard to kill nutgrass anyway and Chufas are nothing but a fancy variety of nutgrass anyway. The sandy land I have is perfect for nutgrass and produces well and the turkey love it.

Read up on Treflan. They say you can spray it when you plant and it will stop weeds. I don't know how expensive it is.

I've had my best luck using Command as the PRE. And I'd much rather use Prowl over Treflan.

Ok. I'll look into that. I've never used a pre before. Do you use the Command when you plant?

For Command or Prowl, just spray it on the ground after it is planted. Treflan has to be disced in.
