We're headed up to Tennessee for the first weekend of their season and I need to get a license for the weekend we're there. Does the small game license cover turkey or will i need the big game?

Turkey is big game in tn. You have to check in your kills too. I can give you more info but I am on my phone right now.

You'll need a big game license and they only sell 7 day license and annual license. I think the 7 day all game is $175 and the all game annual $251. Anyone who does not qualify for a resident license must purchase the appropriate nonresident license(s) to hunt in Tennessee. These do not include WMA or special season permits. I'll have to bite that annual license bullet next week.

Non Resident
Type Description Cost
070 Junior Hunt/Fish - No Big Game
Required for nonresidents ages 13-15 to fish or hunt small game.
A Type 085 or 086 is required to hunt big game. $9.00
085 7-Day Junior Hunt - All Game $25.00
086 Annual Junior Hunt - All Game $40.00
072 7-Day Hunt-Small Game/Waterfowl - No Big Game $50.50
071 Hunt-Small Game/Waterfowl - No Big Game $91.00
074 7-Day Hunting - All Game $175.50
073 Annual Hunting - All Game $251.00
120 Trapping $401.00

you can check them in online if you have a computer and a printer, once you kill one and check it in they will issue you another tag for your next turkey.

Correct, but if you are crossing the state line you have to check it in before you cross the line with the biggame animal.

wow... thats a hefty price tag on a 7 day license Ill bend over and take it when we get there I guess. Whats the deal with checking in animals. Do they give you one tag upfront and get another when you check it,or do you call it in (whats the story there). Odds are there'll be more than one bird killed in the 4 days we're there.

Also, if you hunt any WMA's you need the type 94 permit added to your license. You get a temporay kill tag when you buy your license. When you kill an animal, fill out the tag, attach it to the animal and drive to the check in station. You then take the temporary kill tag inside and they will issue you a permanent kill tag to attach to the animal as well as a new temporary kill tag.

Yes when you buy your license it has your first tag, once you check in your first bird in to the check in station they will print you a new tag, Tennessee does an excellent job keeping up with their turkey harvest information. Also like Gobble Fever said if you hunt any WMA's you'll need Type 94 addition to your license which is $21. Below is a link with everything you will need to know.
