Yeah! I would love to get back to A set of 12...
But did get pretty pumped last week when i pressed 190 8x on my 5th set. That's pretty awesome! Feels good to hit those kinds of milestones later in life doesn't it?
I am 57 and joined a gym last spring. Hit my college bench press max of 225 a month or so ago, but did 3 rep's instead of 1 and almost pulled off the 4th. Just upped my cardio on the stairmaster to level 10, did 152 flights of stairs in 30 minutes last night. I do weights 2 days and cardio 2 days, probably a total of 3 to 3.5 hours a week. Those are good numbers for both of you. Monday's workout bench numbers were 3 sets of 9 at 200 pounds. I felt really good about that. I usually do a different full body workout 5 days a week, and I also do wind sprints 5 days a week. Holding at about 13% body fat right now, because I won't give up beer and bourbon and carbs. But 13% bodyfat and 216 pounds ain't bad for a grandfather of 3. There is a joy you get from working out, setting goals and accomplishing those goals that keeps me going and will hopefully keep me working out even into my advanced years. It sounds like you guys know what I'm talking about.

Gman bench was my favorite but I had to give it up due to chronic Shoulder pain. Went to a sublime Bench instead and the neutral grip helps tremendously. Be careful about getting too heavy. I kept letting my ego get the better of me. Im just a shade under 6'0" and weigh 218 right now. I was repping 315 for 4-5 reps and it almost shut me down a while due to shoulder pain. I know several other middle age guys who quit straight bar bench for the same reason. It is a terrible exercise on shoulders.

I’ve worked out pretty much every week since I was 16 (53 now). At 5’7”, not the biggest fella around, but I feel pretty good about my health and strength. I’ve never had the strongest bench, but last year was working to hit a couple at 275 and felt my shoulder give up the ghost. Took weeks to get over that. Since then Ive changed my routine. I used to do all upper body one day, lower body the next, with one day of nothing before doing again. I used to do 3 exercises for each muscle group. Now, I workout 4 days a week, but when I workout now, I’ll do 4 sets of one exercise per muscle group. So I hit everything each session. Part of that was because my travel makes me miss days, and this way means I dint miss a group because of that. I thought I might lose some strength and size, but have not. I like this routine better, as it also gives me time to stretch, which is something I sorely need now that I’m in my 50’s. Now if I could just have a little discipline in my eating, I might could get back to my high school weight of 173 (185 now).
If you do the things you need to do when you need to do them then someday you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them.

Evereything I have read says older men need to do less reps, and rest longer between sets. My trainer is shifting me to incline bench first now, I have been flat bench first for about a year. They also like to see using dumbells instead of a flat bar. My biggest issue with the bench is I feel like I am going to tip off the side. The head trainer was talking about me getting up to 315, but really, my goal was to get 225. If I stay in that range, I think I will be good. I could max more, but I really don't want to be working out with super heavy weight. My lifting buddy in college can't lift anymore due to torn rotators in both his shoulders. I heard that surgery isn't much fun, so I think being able to do a lower weight but more reps is probably better than a lot of weight and few reps.

Im just glad I can still work out to stay in shape. This works pretty well for me: Day 1 Monday- Chest and triceps. 4 exercises each. 8-10 reps except dips. I do 100 dips in 3 sets, 40-30-30 Day 2 Tuesday- Back and Abs about the same as above but 5 back exercises and 3 for abs Day 3 Legs- 6 exercises over all around 3-4 sets around 8-10 reps Day 4 Shoulders and Biceps. Same as above Rest Friday-Saturday-Sunday
Putting back and abs on day 2 and legs on day 3 gives my shoulder rest after Chest day. If for some reason I needed to wait for chest day I would put it day 4 giving me 3 days rest over the weekends. Im convinced the best routine would be to workout every other day regardless what day it is. That just dont fit my schedule.
Its not the will to win but the will to prepare to win!

I get a workout everyday at the airport dealing with nut jobs.
