I know there has been a lot of threads about this over the past few years, but I mean just in the past 4+ months store bought chicken has just been garbage. Besides the fact that it spoils quick the taste and texture is just not the same.

Are there any local-ish places y’all have tried or any of the online options that are good to try? I don’t want to be a chicken raiser but guess I will if I have to.

Not sure where you are shopping and can’t tell you about your listed area. I get my chicken at Greers here in Mobile. I don’t buy the Sanderson or Spring Mountain chicken. I buy the cheap stuff and it’s fine and tastes good but their butcher needs practice. It’s fine though because I can fix it in three minutes with a knife.

I’ve bought from Publix, Winn Dixie, Piggly Wiggly, Grocery Outlet and PicNSav in that time period probably actually leaving one or two out. I’m not saying every time but something isn’t the same. I guess it could be my taste buds!!

I've always had good luck with Sam's chicken. Just cooked up some chicken I bought from ALDI and it was quite good.

I like the Publix Greenwise organic chicken. Costs more but its much better.

Your local Piggly Wiggly is usually a good choice for chicken. Look for the non branded chicken in plain packages when you go and it's usually a lot cheaper.

Never buy any of the Tyson crap or other brand name garbage.

Have you tried Costco chicken? Usually big birds. Haven’t noticed change in taste but it’s been about a month since I last bought one.

This

Although I liked the spring mountain from Foodland but they haven’t had it in some time. Those birds were smaller and more flavorful. I’m not fond of big bird. Those smaller ones seem to more flavorful

If you’ll drive over here this weekend and get the rest of this hog fat, I’ll let you leave with some chickens…

Ifn by texture ya mean chewy i agree, seem to run into that a lot now, reckon it's because it ain't natural for how fast they (some companies) grow some of these shickens now 😂 Sure seemed whole lot better when thighs wasn't so damn popular lol. On a side note, milk sho don't seem to last after the great reset of 2020 🤷🏾‍♂️

We damn sure have noticed that about the milk, it starts turning bad sometimes 3 or 4 days before the date. But it rarely lasts long enough to go completely bad around here.

Rouses has whole fryers for 88 cents per pound and most were around seven pound. No telling chemicals were pumped into them things.

You can't really skillet fry them over-sized birds they got now. Its either deep fry or bake for a long time. The over sized birds don't taste like chicken either, they just taste like filler for flavoring.

I have had good luck with Springer Mountain chicken, though it is more expensive. The Publix brand has generally been pretty good, as has Piggly Wiggly brand.

Whatever chicken Kroger sells was awful. The breasts were huge and woody. If you haven't already, google "woody chicken" and you'll see this is becoming very common. It has to do with chicken raising methods.

I probably should start buying from the farmer's market, but it is just so expensive for chicken.

You buy mostly water from those pre packaged places anyway. Them maxi pads in the bottom of the container wiegh as much as the chicken parts. LOL

This is a topic that I really feel strongly about and don't think people really understand what they're doing to themselves. I will bring up three quick points and if anyone cares enough I will expand.

1- people want the cheapest food possible. What the first thing you cut, when you start saving money. FOOD ! Where is the cheapest beef Costco, where's chicken on sale, I'm not paying that for pork! Well the truth is that although food cost have gone up. They haven't gone up enough for people to properly raise food. Come with me and I'll show exactly what it cost to raise beef, chicken , pork and produce on my farm. If you do it right no way you can sell it and break even for what it goes for in grocery store!

2- it's not the same food! Eat a store bought tomatoe and a fresh grown one, they don't even taste the same.fresh pork, Publix pork, not the the same food. Farm raised chicken, grocery store chicken, not the same animal. There's reasons for this and I can explain why. But the short of it is people would rather put in there bodies the factory made crap than real food!

3- government regulations. It ridiculous what you have to do to sell food. It's against the law for me to process two cows in my name at one time. And yes they will do an investigation and come knocking on your door, quicker than if you robbed a bank. Why is this? Lotta people dieing from bad farm raised beef right? You gotta get a permit to sell produce, have the health depth inspect you sell eggs. It's absolutely crazy.but while everyone is worried about if Trump paid stormy, they taking complete control of your food. Which one is more important to YOU!

End rant

I get 99% of my meat from the pig. I will agree chicken spoils pretty quickly but idk that it’s new. I try to buy, marinade and cook within two days with chicken, 3-4 days with steak or pork. Unless I freeze it.
