Congrats on the bears you just found a great excu...uhh reason to buy another gun or three. I'm thinking .338 mag for the house and .45 colts for you and Mrs.Irish. 44 mag would work but everyone's got one of those. I understand bears are related to pigs so I'm sure any pork recipie would translate. Welcome to retirement.

Found it!

Looks like the ratchet strap held, but he managed to get some stuff out. I guess I got to get some pants on now and go down there.

I've thought of all the stuff I can do: More straps, install some anchors in the block wall and chain it to the side of the house, and in reality, it might just be best to go in with some other folks and switch over to a common shared dumpster.

Cain't have nuthin'.

Im no help for bear deterrence but That's a nice view. Life's good.

Some folks build a wooden structure to set the can in and hope it works, which it typically does. The real fix is remove the attraction like mentioned and store in shop/garage or the electric fence.

Keeping the can in the garage is a good idea.

... If we had a garage.

I do like the idea of building a little shed for it though. I may try that if my new plan of chaining it to the house, and locking the lid shut doesn't work. That will be plan C.

Apparently the locking dumpster didn't work all that well either.

They hit it pretty hard last night and all the other garbage cans in the hood too.

Ammonia seems to work for me. We’ve had bears get into our can a couple of times, but I started throwing a cardboard box on top of the garbage and pouring ammonia on the box. Haven’t had any problems in a couple of years.

I bought ammonia at Lowes this morning. $2 a bottle. That's going in there today.

What about the trash can containers like they use in Gatlinburg? The ones I've seen are a steel mesh enclosure with a heavy spring loaded lid.

When I was 13, I went to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. They had "bear boxes" that we could put food in to secure it. I got news for you, short of it being all metal, and heavy gauge steel, you aren't keeping a bear out of it. Electricity as Fred said, is probably the best solution.

We have to use the cans provided by the service.

He just thought he was invited to the retirement party and decided to keep coming back because the company and scraps were the best on the mountain.

Irishguy vs The Bear

Episode 3

So I looked through my collection of stupid guy stuff that we never throw away and came up with a couple of ideas, but it still required 2 trips to Lowes for the other pieces that I knew I had, but just couldn't find... 😃

Bolted the refuse receptacle and bear smorgasborg to the CMU wall using 1/4" wedge anchors and double loop chain, I used a similar set-up to hold the top closed.
As an added treat I poured cleaning ammonia on top of the delicious contents.

Y'all are probably betting against me in the office pool, but...

Your turn Yogi...
