I’ve had that exact same play work. Also one where you pick to first and the 1st baseman pretends to throw the ball back to the pitcher and then tags the runner when he goes to lead off.

is why you don't lead off until the pitcher gets set

Pulled this same one several times as a Coach. It worked a few times too. Even when it didnt everyone got a kick out of it.

Only if pitcher is in contact with rubber.

6.02 (a) comment on astride near in an effort to deceive the runner the pitcher takes his position (which is the 18 foot circle) So any part of a pitcher on the mound a foot his hat picking up the roisin bag tying his shoe ANY contact on the mound is deceiving the runner so it's a balk. Yes the national federation (high school) says 5 feet from the rubber. I've ruined at least a dozen hidden ball tricks by simply calling time out. I try not to call the balk by doing that but more than once cuteness cost a base and I'm guessing at least 75% of those runners scored.

We ran a play in high school that Coach Reece called out " Running Blood" in obvious bunting situations. First and Third basemen played close to start with and as soon as the pitcher started his windup they crashed towards home. Without it being an obvious pitchout it was thrown well outside. Meanwhile, the right fielder had been creeping in and on the windup, broke to first. Because often in high school, it was another player coaching First and not a real coach, they would get caught up in what was happening with all the motion of the basemen and not the Right Fielder and never see him slipping in until it was too late. You also had the 2nd and SS yelling "bunt, bunt" the whole time. Simply just a lot of stuff to distract the 1st base coach and runner at first. Of course the Catcher threw behind the runner to the Right Fielder who had come in and was covering 1st.

We would practice this a pretty good bit and it was only used in tight, important games. When the situation was right and we ran it, we nailed the runner more times than not.

Not exactly the hidden ball trick, but it was a well orchestrated trick play if you want to use those words.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Took me a couple of views to see the pitcher had the ball. First time I though that first baseman came a long way. I guess what kept it from being a balk is he never toed the rubber? Looked like he came set , from stretch but was still straddling the rubber. It wasn't a step off because he was never on the rubber. I think they may have tipped off the Ump too. I've seen versions on that work on a lower level , but not HS. I've seen the hidden ball at first work a few times as well.

I taught my kids that on the last team I coached. We had it set up to do with a runner on 2nd or 3rd. We were playing the town favorites and the "superstar" had some wheels and liked to run without listening to the coaches so we suckered him
to round third for home and our pitcher got him half way there. The kid cried and the parents from their team all called us cheaters lol.

He stepped off the rubber. Watch the first move of his foot is to go behind the rubber. The runner just simply got decoyed by the infielders.

Look at it close, stop it at the very first , 01 second, then start it . I don't believe his right foot was ever in front of or on the rubber, it's already behind it when comes set , plain as day. When he moves his back foot you can then see the rest of the back of the rubber. Unless he pitches off the back of the rubber , he wasn't on it. That's how he sold his part of the hoax. He's set in this pic, next move is to second .

Totally unrelated, but that looks like a small field for pretty big kids.

Good eye, short and a dang pop up fence . I can tell ya , up North High School ball isn't the same as down here. We used to have a team from up that way come down during their Spring break and play some NA teams. They said they had to scrape snow off their fields in early spring. They were supposed to be pretty good up there but about everyone down here roughed them up.

Carver-Montgomery had a little field like that and Coach Reece hated playing there for two reasons. First, he preached and preached about not trying to hit it out. Players that had never hit a home run saw this as their chance and made them change their swing. Then the field was by a gravel pit and when school got out and kids were walking home, games of hit the outfielders with rocks was popular.
