My momma put in a grandkid magnet 24 years ago. And boy did she show out. It's one of the nicest pool/patio combos that I've ever seen. That pool eats liners. It hasn't been more than 5 years ago that she had one put in, and now there's a big hole in that one. I'm not happy about it at all. A pool liner is waayy out of any scope of expertise that I might have. I suggested this time, to fill the hole with dirt, but she says she's going to put "one more" liner in it. She said that last time too. My daughter has her first "big girl" job, post graduate school and she has moved out of our house. She still lives on the farm.

I am pretty much not happy with the workmanship of any company that she's used to do any of the work on the pool, since it was put in, in 2000. I don't want to step on anyone's toes that has done work on it, so I'll ask the question this way. This pool is located in Albertville, I want to go "abroad" to find better craftsmanship. Are there any pool people in Huntsville or Birmingham that you guys personally know, that you would recommend to install a quality liner, at a fair price, for your 78 year old mother? I don't want to have to go off on someone, but if they mess with my momma, we're going to have issues. Big issues. She/I want a QUALITY, long lasting job done. She will pay, I will inspect. I'm not a Billy Bob bad a, but those of you who still call your mother, momma, when you're in your 50's will know where I'm coming from. Thanks.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Is she keeping the chemicals balanced properly?......That can have a big impact on how long liners last.

No offense but it may not be the quality of craftsmanship as much as it is the quality of the liner your mom chose. They come in all thicknesses. Obviously the thinner the liner, the cheaper, but it won’t last as long. Go with a thicker liner. That’s what I did. We have friends who also have a pool that have to change liners ever 6-7 years because they go with the cheapest liner available. I’ve been told that a good, quality, thick. Liner should last 15 years minimum.

The foundation of the pool or the way it was built might be having an impact on the liner. They all order the material from the same manufacturer, and then it is laid/ cut to fit and the air is vaccummed from underneath. There’s nothing to it, so I’m not sure what kind of quality you’d be looking for. I’ll also add that changes in formula for those liners can change as well. I know folks that have had a liner for 20 years, and some that only make it 3.

Jaredhunts and his guys are top notch in the liner business but I’m not sure if they service the Albertville area. If not, maybe he can recommend someone that can take care of you.

Saltwater is way to go. Chemicals are hard on pool liners.

Back when we had a pool I switched from those who installed it to dealing with Anders Pool in Huntsville. Not sure if they go that far, but I’d recommend them. Compared to where I had been getting pool stuff, they were more than reasonable. Cut opening costs by two thirds and maintenance was far cheaper. Had them install a salt water chlorine generator and costs went down more. Once we made the decision to change over to dirt, they even recommended a guy for that.

Have you considered having it turned into a gunite pool? When you add up the cost of several liners, that might be the way to go and if she sells her home down the road a gunite pool would be better than a liner.

Thanks guys. I will ask more questions, but I doubt she skimped on the replacement liners, but I'll ask. Lots of info to process. Thanks again.

I really think the liners we (the company I worked for) installed had 20 year a warranty that was prorated after year 8 or 9. I would call around to different companies and ask what warranty their liners have. Make sure you ask them if their labor will be covered in year 1-whatever. Anyway, even with chlorine a pool liner should last 20 years.

One issue could be sizing. If a bottom is "over dug" it will stretch the liner too far and make it thin. The pool can be within a couple inches deeper than liner states, but if the liner is for an 8 foot deep pool and the pool is 9 feet deep that is a problem.

Agree, Gunite is better but it’s very expensive and may be hard to do after the fact.

I’ve never heard of any liner ever lasting 15 years minimum. Certainly not typical. Even Gunite has to be addressed every 15 years or so.

My pool needs a liner and I’ve been floored by the quotes so far. $5200-5600.

Mine averaged 5 years. Poor drainage around the pool caused mine to float during the winter.

What an odd conversation piece. Now you got me wondering if I’m an a*hole because I’m not asking my buddies about their liner life.
