I'm just going to put them in the potting soil that the flowers grew in. The drain holes are already in the hanging baskets. We will see. I'd think a few holes in bucket would work the same though

I used to do a bucket garden every year. What always worked for me was to drill one 1/2" hole in the side of the bucket 3 inches from the bottom. Fill the bottom 3 inches of the bucket with rocks up to the hole then fill with dirt and plant. The theory behind doing it this way is, when you water the plants you water until it starts coming out of the hole then stop. The roots of the plants will grow down into the rocks and have 3 inches of water to drink on. As the summer comes and gets hotter you will have to water them almost daily. To check if you have water you just tilt the bucket to see if water comes out the hole. There are all kinds of ways to do a garden in buckets but I was always very successful using this method.
In your darkest hour when the demons come, call on me brother and we'll fight them together.

I do 90% of my garden in large buckets and my 3 raised beds. Green beans, pink eyes, and okra only in the traditional garden. My yield has doubled at the least.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I like MS_Hunter’s approach.

no gravel, just rain holes and daily watering.
