I've used the propane freon in the past as a direct replacement for r-22. It worked pretty good and was supposed to be a lot more efficient. certainly was cheaper. i'm all for it, but pretty sure they will figure out a way to make it expensive. the non repairable is probably just a precaution. today's climate change freons are not that good. There was a time when an automobile would freeze you out and now they barely get cold enough driving them brand new off the lot

Propane has been used as a refrigerant for decades. R290 is the refrigerant name for it.It is efficient and relatively cheap. The blend that is being pushed on us only has small amount of propane in it but it is not cheap.

Propane was also the perfect replacement for r12 in automotive applications. The automotive version of the new generation of refrigerant (r1234yf) has been in use since 2016 in some brands (Honda most notably) but others having been transitioning to it. The flammability doesn’t bother me at all, the tough part to swallow is the price. $50-60 for an 8 ounce can, compared to $10 for a 12oz can of 134a. Honeywell owns the patent for it, and it’s set to run out this year so prices may drop a little but will never be as cheap as 134a
