didn't want to hijack the other thread, so started a new one. I got my old flyrod out this morning. The last time I used it was June 2007. It's been stored indoors, but 17 years is 17yrs. I'm going to remove all the line (floating line, backing, everything) and start fresh.

how much and what weight of each (floating and backing line) should I be putting on this thing? If it counts, I plan to take it up to the Sipsey Fork for trout and maybe around here for small bass...nothing huge. Also, what length/weight tippet/leader do y'all like?

Rod is 9' #6, if it matters

Typically match the line weight to the rod weight.Water clarity and fish will determine leader/tippet length and size.I normally just use 4 pound mono or fluorocarbon at least as long as the rod…

The reel specs should tell you how much backing it will hold with a standard length fly line. For what you plan to fish for, probably no more 150 yards of 20# backing.
Leaders are typically 8’ for floating lines. For trout, probably no more than 6# test tippet.
Bass you might go up to 10# to be safe.

For trout I usually use 9’ 6x leader and add tippet if I’m trying to get deeper in the water column. Most of the shops will add backing for free if you buy the line from them (orvis, Cabela, bass pro etc) good luck!

I'd get a quality line. Rio trout (weight forward floating WFF) or scientific anglers. These lines will run ~$60-80. Match the weight to the rod, so you'll need a 6wt line with a 6 wt rod. I prefer a furled leader 5-7' in length, then I add 2' of tippet to that, whether I want 6X for trout or 8lb for bass.

Fly line usually have a loop in both ends. Backing is tied on with an arbor knot. Then tie a non-slip loop in the other end. Then connect the fly line to your backing loop via loop to loop connection. I also use loop to loop for fly line to leader. Plenty of demo pictures and videos online for the whole process.
